I think the sound your describing comes from the ventilation system, if you push the button on your ventilation system that controls the air recycling it should reproduce the sound that you are describing.Apparently it is a plastic gear that switches between outside air and recycling and this gear has become damaged and lost some of its teeth.
You have to dismantle your glove box to be able to get to the mechanism to replace it. I have the same problem with my 2004
9-3 and as this fault does not affect the running of the car and the ventilation system is still fully functional i have decided to leave it as is. Hope this is of some help
