The play in the shaft that your flywheel is causing your issue-you need to find the reason for that 1/2 inch wobble, although the most obvious would probably be a rear main bearing.or a bent (?) crankshaft...ask your rebuilder to double check the bendix gear operation on the starter, but it sounds like your problems are not the starter based on your description.

I am aware it is a bike...(there is a photo of it next to your question)...I own a bike repair shop.

YOu do know that a flywheel, bike or car, is NOT supposed to 'wobble' don't you? Duh...thanks for the sterling review, hope you get it running someday.

The 1995 Triumph Thunderbird is known for Sprag Clutch failure. The sprag clutch acts as a one-way clutch to allow the starter motor to drive the crankshaft and thus start the engine. Once the engine starts, the crankshaft is turning faster than the starter motor can, so it basically "free-wheels." Also, while you are in there, take not of whether you have the 51 tooth gear or the 53 tooth gear. The 51 tooth gear had problems, so Triumph changed them for a 53 tooth gear. I would recommend obtaining a service manual for this bike before attempting to replace the Sprag Clutch.

I have a bike I come off an I lost keys now doesn't spark I have kick but still nothing another thing is I Ave a quad it was running then it stopped it makes a noise from starter motor but doesn't turn...

For the quad, I can only speak from automotive experience but does the starter have a smaller cylinder mounted directly on it? If so, this is the magnetic solenoid that engages a Bendix gear drive on the starter shaft into the engine flywheel gear to crank it. The actual switch that turns on the starter motor itself is in the back end of this solenoid. If the motor turns, the solenoid is working. If it doesn't have this solenoid, it will have a shallow screw drive cut directly in the motor shaft with a Bendix drive gear on it. When you hit the starter, the shaft turns quickly and basically "unscrews" the Bendix drive to the end of the motor shaft and engages it with the flywheel gear, again, cranking the engine. The weak link in both of these systems is the Bendix drive itself. It has a built in ratchet based on ball bearings so that if the shaft happens to stick in the engaged position after the engine starts, it will only spin the Bendix drive itself and not the starter motor avoiding damage to it. These ball bearings will eventually break up allowing the Bendix to free wheel in both directions instead of catching in one direction to crank the engine and slipping in the other direction to protect the motor. I hope this helps.

1998 harley won't start, just loud clicks, then all of a sudden it will turn over and start

I would put my money on a bad starter motor. I probably has either burned out brushes or the commutator is severely pitted and the brushes aren't getting juice into the armature. When you click it a hundred times, the starter motor turns enough to hit a good spot on the commutator and the motor takes off and spins the engine. Replace the starter.

Raptor660 turns but wont crank it was doing that when i first got it a buddy of mine was tapping the startor it fired up next morning he said it fired strate up no choke rode 4 a while relay burnt out...

You have a bad starter one way clutch inside the motor. You fixed the external problem now you have to fix the internal one. If the starter motor is turning but the motor is not, then the one way clutch is slipping on the large starter gear next to the flywheel. You will have to replace both the one-way clutch attached to the flywheel and the large starter gear that fits into it to fix the problem. The contact surface on the gear has become rough or chattered and is no longer smooth , so the clutch will not grab it hard enough to turn the motor over and start it.

After installing a rebuilt starter , when i try to start it , the solenoid clicks very loud 2 times, it will start on the 3rd try . almost think it is hitting the flywheel . have they ever used shims on...

Yes. Most starters come with shims. More than likely that is exactly what you need to do is to shim the starter. More than likely the bendix is hitting the flywheel. Just as you said.

Starter spins but dose not turn over

If you can hear it spin(starter), but not actually hear the motor turning over or trying to crank/start..... Sounds like starter not engaging-Replace starter. Small possibility flywheel is damaged, but less likely.

Huskee 18.5 lawn tractor, engin doesn;t wnat to turn over. sometimes starts and runs great other times acts like vapor lock or almost dead battery. has new battery, fully charged.

Take the starter cover off, look at the Plastic/metal gear. Is it in the up position on the flywheel, if so, the starter is not operating as it should. The gear should come back down out of the flywheel area. When the gears stay up like this, it causes the flywheel to be in a bind. The starter has to have the bendix to shift the gear up into the flywheel to turn over the engine. This is a common problem when a mower will start sometimes and hesitate like it don't have enough of battery power to turn it over, but in reality, it's binding and will burn the starter up if you try to start it too much.
