After taking the bearig box off the head, remove the retaining ring and wave washer on top of the gear. Some spindles can be tapped out of the gear with a hammer but be extremely careful not to mushroom the spindle head. It's best to take it off with a hydraulic press. There is a woodruff key in there so be careful not to loose that when you press the spindle out of the gear. The new gear should be pressed back on also.
there is a screw in the bottom of grinder next to the power cord, that's all you have to take.
(althought I don't know the model of your grinder, the most of makita brands have the screw right there) good luck!
This is definitly a bad switch. You can contact Grainger or MSCDirect, and give them the model number and the make/ They should be able to send you out a new switch. These are pretty basic circuits and only take about 20min to replace.
You can try removing brush covers and brushes to check and clean as needed.I have a makita grinder and have to change brushes about every two years but I use mine a lot in very dusty conditions.I think that I would probably check on/off switch about first as I have had mine do exactly what you have and I replaced the switch and it's still working.I have had mine for 15 years.Great little grinders. If you feel comfortable doing so you can bypass swith to make sure motor is good. Best of luck and thank you.
does it run freely?as in not seem to be lugging from bad bearings in the motor shaft, then check the speed control board for a shorted triac/scr transistor
First check to make sure the outlet you plugged into has power. (You may have tripped a GFI elsewhere). The next possible problem is either buildup on the brushes and commutator shaft or in the switch assembly itself. (I have this problem on one of my grinders due to dust in the switch assembly).
