if you have spark and fuel in the cylinders then it should start make sure the firing order is correct and you mentioned the timing marks so you probably did a timing belt you may still be 180 off , if the belt broke and its an over head valve you may have squashed the valves tring to start it with a broken timing belt
need help putting my 1997 honda accord in time.I got the cam pullie on top and crank top dead center.does the oil pump gear haft to go straght up too.and one more thing when we get the belt on it keeps tring to roll offneed help bad.Can anybody help please?
If you don't have a timing light or the right spec's, have someone that is qualified do it. If you are tring to have it run better with a worn timing belt you are asking to be left stranded somewhere.
You can always tell if a car has a timing belt or chain by looking at the timing belt/chain cover. Metal cover means chain, plastic cover means belt, there are a few exceptions but in general this holds true, your Sportage has a belt by the way. :)
look at the cam sprokets they should have an I and an E stamped on them then by the gear they should have a notch. the back timing cover will have a V symbol. then match them up the cam close to the intake side will have the I mark up and the cam on the exhaust side will have the E up.
No "special" tool that I'm aware of...you've posted related question about this task...I do NOT recommend doing this at home...A mechanic shouldn't charge all that much, say $150 max to do this job and then it'll be done right the first time...If you "accidentally" knock the engine out-of-time you could cause engine damage $$$$
