SOURCE: Craftsman Transmission problem

Some of these tractors have a friction wheel that is driven off of a flat wheel on the bottom of the engine drive shaft. The rubber ring on this friction wheel could be worn out, or it could be out of adjustment.

1999-2000 VINTAGE, gt 50"/20hp, i need to change a broken trans axle drive pulley. the pulley is very close to the frame to get off the shaft w/o dropping the trans-axle, how many bolts do i have to remove...

Easiest way - remove the deck, then physically lift the front of the tractor up so it sits on it's tail end. Most Craftsman models will sit like this unsupported. In this position, the engine will not leak oil, and you can see what you're doing.

Disconnect brake at transaxle. Apply parking brake (now disconnected, but it will also release belt tension).

Disconnect shift lever at trans.

Remove wheels.

Remove 6 bolts (4 through half shaft bearing supports, 2 through brackets at front of trans)

Remove trans & fix.

Lawn tractor forward movement problem

Check the adjustment from the lever to the transaxle, if the linkage is ok the transaxle may be suffering from age and has leaking internal seals.

Rear pulley snapped of transaxle, is this fixable & at what cost

Theoretically yes, it is possible. The cost of the parts (and labor if you don't do it yourself) are prohibitive for this; you would have to replace the transaxle, or it would even be possible to weld the shaft if it didn't break too close to the housing. You even have the option of taking the case apart and welding it, but internal transmission parts are rarely sold separately from the transaxle itsself. All in all, by the time you got done replacing the transaxle, you would be nearing the territory of the cost of a new mower. My suggestion is to remove as many parts as you can salvage from it, ebay them off, and use that towards a different mower.

Repair or replace trans axle pulley on a sears 917.276013. Pulley just spins on mandrel.

since the parts illustration doesn't show a woodruff key, i would guess that the input shaft of the transaxle has a flat area that matches up to a flat on the pulley - if it's just spinning, that would mean either the flat has been worn out, the center of the pulley has broken the weld, or the transaxle has something broken internally - the pulley is held on with a snap ring and thrust washer, remove those and the pulley should slide off the shaft - pulley part no. is 184787
