The battery that's in my 1993 883 Sportster is not the correct one. The terminals are not in the right place. Does any one know what the proper battery group is for this application...?

I tried the pep boys route of getting a battery...i would have had to put the acid in the battery and charge it.i wasted like $70 and couldnt use it. i went to Harley and bought their gel battery for i think around $80 , that was in feb. 2008!!though i ride my bike daily,i run 2 sets of blue l.e.d. lights and im still using the same battery. ive got over 4 years so far and it was charged and ready when i bought it!!

How do i remove starter from Harley Davidson 2003 sportster 883

Remove the negative battery terminal or the ground cable to case connection and then remove the primary cover and then remove the two starter mounting bolts and washers with a ball hex driver. THEN remove rear exhaust pipe, remove the positive battery lead and solenoid wire from the starter. Remove the starter and gasket from the right side of the motorcycle.

INSTALLATION procedures:

Install starter and starter gasket from the right side of the motorcycle, then attach the positive battery cable and solenoid wire to the solenoid and from the left side install the two starter mounting bolts and washers and tighten them to 13-20 ft-lbs which is 18-27 Nm. Then reinstall the primary cover, fill it to the proper level with primary chaincase/transmission fluid/oil and then reconnect the battery ground and re-install the rear exhaust pipe.

How do I hook up a charger to my sportster battery

Most importantly you must connect it correctly to the positive and negative terminal!!

First find where the battery is on your bike you shouldn't need to remove it from the bike - once you have located the battery have a close look at the wires going to it.

RED - positive

BLACK - negative

You must make sure you connect the red "positive" to the positive terminal and visa versa for the negative .

connect the battery charger clamps to the terminals and then turn on the power to the charger after its all connected.

hope this helps

Ignition fuse location 94 sportster

It's more likely that your battery terminals are dirty or have become loose. Clean and check your battery terminals. If I recall correctly (I had a 1993 Sportster as well years ago), I had that happen a few times. Best of luck to you!

79 sportster charging system voltreg and generater keep going out with new battery

This is unusual since the generator is usually pretty tough. I've got one question. Are you properly "polarizing" the generator? To "polarize" the generator, you need a piece of wire that will reach from the battery to the generator.

"With the generator on motorcycle and connected to regulator, connect one end of a jumper wire to the generator armature terminal. Momentarily touch the other end of the jumper wire to the positive terminal of the battery. This restores the magnetism, Remove the jumper."

This is directly out of an H-D service manual. The 'polarizing" procedure should be done anytime any part of the charging system is removed from the bike. Since a generator produces a DC current, this insures that the current is of the correct polarity.

Also, make sure that the voltage regulator that is bolted to the frame is well grounded. It depends on this ground to regulate the voltage. We usually put one of the "star" type lock washers between the regulator and the frame on each of the mounting bolts. The teeth on the washer dig into the frame and the body of the regulator providing a good ground. And, make sure that you've got the wires properly connected. The green wire goes to the "Field" terminal and the two tan wires go to the 'Armature" terminal. If you need a complete schematic, contact me directly at [email protected]

Good Luck
Steve

How to get to the negative terminal on the battery 1200 sportster

Nothing needs to be removed. You have to move the swiring around just a little. Magnetize a 11 mmm socket and set it on using a 1/4 inch ratchet, with a short extension. Loosen the nut and pull it out. Its a bi&^%$%^ to get out but it will come right out and then pull the battery out the side. make note on how the cables are set on the battery so you put it back in the proper way and the battery cables dont touch anything when you put them back in the holder. Hope this helps. TOM
