I'm sorry that the Camera is not recognized by the Computer. Unfortunately, knowing the Operating System is the key element in providing troubleshooting the PC connection. However, I will give you the troubleshooting steps which is general for the compatible Operating Systems for the Camera:
The compatible Operating Systems are as follows:

  • Windows XP
  • Windows Me
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows 7
  • Mac OS X

Please follow the below troubleshooting steps if your Computer is installed with any of the above mentioned Operating System. Please note that other Operating Systems are not compatible with your Camera.
  1. Please make sure that the connections are secure. Prior to making any adjustments, first ensure you've firmly connected your Camera's USB cable into the USB port on your PC.
  2. Power off and disconnect your Camera from your computer.
  3. Restart your computer.
  4. After your computer is rebooted, connect your camera to your computer using the USB cable provided. Note: Connect your camera to an alternate USB port, preferably on the back of your computer.
  5. Select MTP instead of default PC from the USB select screen appears on the LCD screen after connect the Camera to the Computer.
  6. If the issue persists, please check the Device Manager driver conflicts by following the steps:
  • Connect the camera to the computer with the USB cable.
  • Turn on the camera.
  • Open the Device Manager of the operating system.

Windows 2000 - Right-click the My Computer icon, left-click Properties , left-click the Device Manager tab.
XP: Right-click the My Computer icon, left-click Properties , left-click the Hardware tab, left-click the Device Manager button.
Windows Vista: Click the Start button, click Control Panel , click System and Maintenance , click the Device Manager button.
Windows 7: Click the Start button, click Control Panel , click Hardware and Sound , under Devices and Printers , click Device Manager. You may try the steps before give up even if the Operating System is Windows 7 as it supports many cameras with default driver.
  • In the Device Manager window, at the left of Universal Serial Bus controllers , click the PLUS (+) symbol.
  • Under Universal Serial Bus controllers , right-click Sony DSC or USB Mass Storage Device to display the drop-down menu.
  • In the drop-down menu, click Uninstall or Remove.
  • In the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, click the OK button.
  • Restart the computer.
  • Follow any on-screen instructions to complete reinstallation of the USB driver.

If the issue persists, reset the Camera by removing the battery for more than one minutes and check the operation.
I hope following the above troubleshooting steps should definitely resolve the issue. If you require any further assistance, please get back to me with the exact Operating System, I can definitely help you with this.
If a PC connection is not recognized by a Computer, most probably it will not be a hardware issue.

Need manual for dsc-w50 camera

Most of the documentation for the Sony CyberShot DSC-W50 is available on the product support page: https://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-home.pl?mdl=DSCW50&template_id=1®ion_id=1&tab=manuals#/manualsTab . Make sure to look at the Manuals tab. Scroll down for the User Guide. The direct link to the manual appeared as https://docs.sony.com/release//DSCW30-W40-W50-W70.pdf in my browser history.

I hope this helps.

I want to connect my camera as Webcam, What is the way? Model: Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W50

There isn't. The DSC-W50 was designed as a camera, to store images and videos to memory. It was not designed to stream images live to another device.

YOU NEED TO POINT TO SONY-eSUPPORT DSC-W50-SOFTWAREUPDATES AND DRIVERS.

THIS SHOULD SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM. IF NOT, REPLY TO: ARCLIGHT1217 AND I WILL DO SOME MORE CHECKING ON THIS SITE. THANKS AND GOOD LUCK! JUST A QUESTION- AREN'T THESE TWO OF THE OLDER MAC OS SYSTEMS? I THOUGHT THEY WERE USING LEOPARD AND 10.0? THEY WERE THE ONLY ONES LISTED SO FAR.

Lost disk dsc-w50

You don't need any special software.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or, despite what I said first, you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.
