Internal Harddrive giving hissing sound.and not booting. Model: western digital WD5000AAKS 500gb SATA internal drive. On PCB it says: 2060-701640-002 REV-A Recorded sound .wav file: http://www.4shared.com/audio/G0xM0qrf/ext_-1.html Question: 1)From the sound, can we tell that it is from any component? Does it tell that the motor is not spinning and it is probably a motor jammed up problem and NOT a head problem? 2) Will the 5 hour freezer technique work for such situations?

Your hard drive is probably either failing, or about to fail. The 5 hour freeze technique will at best buy you a few hours to backup your data. I would backup everything and prepare for that drive to fail.

Thanks ashtonkemerl. My internal harddrive has failed, as it is not booting and also is not working as secondary drive. Thats why,..I am trying to find a way to recover data or anyway to fix it to retrieve data. Appreciate any suggestions in finding what coulkd be the problem based on sound. I know there are like 7 to 11 types of sounds,..but trying to understand,..what the wav fileI posted means.

The sounds harddrives make when they fail are generally specific to make and model. You're probably best trying the freezer trick (remember to place in a water tight bag with all the air removed, to avoid condensation!), or a professional recovery service.

WD hard drives use drivers that are built into the operating system (OS). It is extremely rare for the built-in drivers to become damaged or corrupted. The most common reason the operating system fails to recognize a drive is that the drive is defective or damaged.

After a year, this WD50000AAKS just stop working and cannot find in BIOS. Stay away from this Western Digital SATA drive ****.

the problem is the controler og the drive wich is:
Marvell, 88i6745-TFJ1, internal EEPROM: - this chip is used in Western Digital's Tornado family, eg WD5000AAKS-xxTMA0, WD5000AAKS-xxYGA0, WD3200AAJS. - it has a common failure mode that mimics head/media faults, eg clicking, spin-down.found it here: http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/HDD_ICs.txt

WD5000aaks western digital 500GB HDD motor not spining,

Try reseating the power connector for the drive. You can try another unused connector if it will reach. Do the same for the data cable. Reseat both ends of the cable a couple of times to shine up the contacts. If none of this works, then a data recovery service will be needed.

Trying to format a 500GB HDD at full capacity

check your bios if the disk is recognized as 500gb first. if it is not recognized, update your motherboard bios. most updates are available in their manufacturers site.
