what is the error message that you're getting.. usually windows vista will not downgrade your operating system to windows xp. You may need to remove vista before you can load xp.
make sure to save a back up of all of your important files before you do that.
do you have a valid copy of xp, or not? If not, then forget it. If so, then do the validation, with windows update. The days of operating with impunity are over, from what I know of the new 'keying' strategy from MSoft. got backup?
