Here are some general operating instructions for the Corona SX3 kerosene portable heater:
Fill the heater tank with kerosene. Make sure the heater is placed on a flat and stable surface before filling.
Turn the wick adjustment knob to the lowest setting.
Open the fuel cap and use a funnel to fill the tank with kerosene up to the maximum fill line.
Close the fuel cap and let the wick soak in the kerosene for at least 10 minutes before lighting.
After the wick has soaked for 10 minutes, use a lighter or match to light the wick at the top.
Adjust the wick height to the desired level using the wick adjustment knob. The higher the wick, the more heat the heater will produce.
Keep the heater away from flammable materials and make sure it is not placed near any open flames or heat sources.
Use the shut-off switch to turn off the heater when you are finished using it.
Unfortunately, I could not find a specific manual for the Corona SX3 kerosene portable heater online. If you have any other questions or concerns about operating the heater, you may want to contact the manufacturer directly for further assistance.
If you've already purchased a new wick from a reputable dealer/retailer and its the one designated for your model Corona heater. The installation instructions come packaged with the wick. I would encourage you to wear rubber gloves if the heater tank still has kerosene in it.
From your description, it sounds like the wick may need replacing or the tails of the wick are not hanging all the way down into the tank. And, therefore they are drying out. Thus, your flame gets low and eventually goes out. The only way to know is take the heater apart. If you're not comfortable doing that check with your local hardware stores, like True Value or Ace. many of these store do repairs on kerosene heaters and replace wicks. It can be a messy job, but someone has to do it.
I just use a match. Turn the setting dial to High. Open the little door in front. The one with glass in it. Light the match. Push the pedal down that you normally use to start it with the battery starter. Put the match into the heater and touch it to the wick. With just a regular match, I can reach in far enough to light the wick. When you have a complete ring of fire, lower the pedal slowly and close the door. It will smoke briefly and then burn. After 15 minutes lower the wick till the flame is smaller and whiter.
Check all airvents into conbustion chamber. Make shure they are all clear of blockage. The heater needs air to burn fule properly. Check wick adjustment it may have to much wick.
runnig the heater too low on kerosene causes the wick to dry out an char and make sure the wick adjustment is working properly and lowering it enough to get saturated
You must be very careful and follow the instructions exactly on these wicks. The pins must be inserted into the holes on the wick holder. It is also easy to install the wick holder upside down. Look for a small up arrow on the side.
You must soak your wick for at least 30 minutes, preferably 1 hour. I know it's tempting to light it right away, especially when you are freezing, but you must wait. Wicks work by using capillary action. The fuel must have time to soak in properly.
All wicks are NOT created equal. Buy good ones, under no circumstances should you buy the ones that Walmart sells. They **** and you will be changing it in a day or two. Home depot sells a decent one, but for the really good ones visit Miles Stair wick shop. He also has some good info to deal with condensation and moisture problems.
Also note these heaters will not work if they are dirty. They must be absolutely clean of all dirt and debris, every single part. Especially the parts that come in contact with the wick.
Regular maintenance, good wicks and good fuel will keep these heaters working.
