From your description, it sounds like the wick may need replacing or the tails of the wick are not hanging all the way down into the tank. And, therefore they are drying out. Thus, your flame gets low and eventually goes out. The only way to know is take the heater apart. If you're not comfortable doing that check with your local hardware stores, like True Value or Ace. many of these store do repairs on kerosene heaters and replace wicks. It can be a messy job, but someone has to do it.

Black smoke coming kerosene

hi dear,

First of all make sure that the heater is filled with K-1 Kerosene. Other fuel, such as gasoline, home heating oil, etc. do not burn hot, causing the heater to burn out of control. NEVER USE GASOLINE or any other fuel described as flammable. If there is any question about the fuel in your heater it is best to drain it and replace the wick and start with fresh K-1 Kerosene. If you are sure of your kerosene and your heater is giving off sooty black smoke it is a sign that the fuel/air mix is off. Make sure your heater is not in a draft. Too much air can create a very high flame condition. Avoid placing the heater in drafty areas or under a ceiling fan. Make sure the burner chimney is seated correctly. If the burner chimney didn't seat into place correctly after lighting you may be getting a very high flame on one side. If it's a high orange flame all the way around try rolling the wick adjuster knob down within the adjustment range - the wick may just be raised too high. If these things do not fix the problem wait until the heater is cool and inspect the burner cylinder. If there are any holes plugged with soot it needs to be cleaned, or if it's dented or buckled it needs to be replaced. After you have checked the fuel and burner you should check to make sure the wick is installed at the correct height. Refer to the owner's manual for exact wick height. If the wick is installed correctly and there is no other obvious defect it is best to take the heater to a service center to determine the cause. Our Find a Retailer tool can be used to help find a servicing center.

Heater will not stay lit after firing it up. Replaced wick and kerosene.

Two things usually cause the problem you noted. An improperly installed wick or the tails of the wick are not all the way into the tank. Therefore, it won't absorb enough kerosene for it to continually burn

Check out those two things and one of the other should solve your problem.

Is it possible to manually ignite a corona 22dk kerosene heater safely with a butane lighter? the battery operated igniter is not working with new batteries installed.

I just use a match. Turn the setting dial to High. Open the little door in front. The one with glass in it. Light the match. Push the pedal down that you normally use to start it with the battery starter. Put the match into the heater and touch it to the wick. With just a regular match, I can reach in far enough to light the wick. When you have a complete ring of fire, lower the pedal slowly and close the door. It will smoke briefly and then burn. After 15 minutes lower the wick till the flame is smaller and whiter.

Corona DK 23 kerosene heater won't start

try bringing your wick up to the fully raised position and pinch and bend the wick toward the igniter until they line up right. I have two coronas one of which has a broken igniter due to wear and tear. If you open the little door, press down the start lever, and light the wick with a barbecue grill lighter, you can safely light the heater if lining up the wick fails.

Burns unevenly and smokes

try emptying your heater of fuel, and lighting it letting burn for several hours. This will burn all of the deposits off of the wick. Make sure your heater is outside when you do this. when done lower the wick, fill with fuel, and let the wick soak for fifteen minutes before lighting. If this doesn't work try brushing the top of the wick a light brush of some sort and light. If still no luck, change the wick.

High flame on 23-DK

Try opening the little door on the front and grabbing the metal spring like piece inside, moving it back and forth until it seats correctly.

Diesel

well, somebody once told me that if you add a quart of oil to 5 gal of kero, it makes a good diesel substitute. So, in theory, I would add a little ethinal (corn gas) to the kero.
