Remove the cover from the motor unit and check the drive gear. It may be stripped and if it is it will be obvious. It is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor.

Garage door opener just hums, won't go up or down

Either the motor has seized or the door itself has jammed. Unlock the manual release (Usually a cord or lever hanging down 1/2 way along the track) Sometimes if its a side mounted motor, the lever will be at the side of the motor .Pull the cord or move the lever, and the door should be able to be opened manually. If its stuck then you will need to check the tracks and rollers on the door and door frames to see whats jamming it. Repair or replace as required. If the door comes up freely, that will prove its not the door jamming.Try leaving the door in the manual position and turn the motor on. The door wont open or close itself when in the manual position, but the motor should run. If it still hums, I would say the motor has seized. Sometimes, its cheaper to get a new opener / motor complete assembly rather than a replacement motor on its own. Check with the manufacturer and or supplier of the door opener to confirm.

M otor hums but door does not open

If the motor is running and the chain or belt isn't moving, you have a broken gear in the opener.

Motor hums but does not open garage door

Either the opener trolley is disengaged or you have a broken gear/sprocket assy.

My 41A4315-7a Garage door opener Motor does not engage. It just hum sfor a second then stops. I checked the internal gears and they seem fine. The door buzzes for a second then stops. Any Ideas.

If the door is not stuck in the open position and just hums you could have a bad start capacitor. It is alongside the motor and has 4 wires going to it.

My garage door hums but does not open. It had

Sounds like you have a bad start capacitor. It sits next to the motor and is about the diameter of a silver dollar and about 5 inches long. You can get one at any good door opener service company.

Motor hums but door will not open

Remove the cover and check the drive gear. It is white nylon and is just in front of the motor. The part number is 41A2817 and is available from Sears or any good door opener service company. It comes with instructions.

Motor hums but nothing happens

I just had the same problem. Extreme cold, garage door stops working, motor hums, same here. I opened up the my garage door opener(after unplugging it), and found that the wormwheel had a wear spot on it. This is the gear that allows the motor to raise and lower the garage door. Any way, after the wife "sugested" that the door was too heavy to lift, I went and bought a new garage door lifter. But if you are handy dandy with tools, I have seen the wormwheel for sale here. http://www.aaaremotes.com/gearsprocask.html It's the plastic wheel that went bad on me. If I would have found this before buying the garage door opener, I would have got the sprocket assembly. I hope this helps!
