Without knowing the background of your experience with the unit, it is a bit hard to determine if it is a hardware / software problem. I suppose the first thing is to decide is, are there any habits that you have developed when using the unit that may contribute to the problem of rapid battery deterioration.
When you are using the unit, do you leave turned on for long periods in between reading sessions?
When you finish using the unit, do you switch off by gently sliding the off switch or do you completely turn it off by sliding the switch to the right and holding it for 2-3 seconds?
When you charge the battery, are you confident that the battery is fully charged before disconnecting? (The handbook will help to describe when this state is achieved.)
I guess you are using the unit properly in which case it is almost certain that it is a hardware / software problem and needs to be returned. If you go this route you probably either need a new battery or if the hardware is faulty, a replacement unit.
Despite the problems you are experiencing, I have to say that the normal cycle between charges of my PRS-600 is not as long as I expected or hoped. In my case, this is about 5-8 days of steady use at about 1/2 to 1 hour per day.
