Without knowing the background of your experience with the unit, it is a bit hard to determine if it is a hardware / software problem. I suppose the first thing is to decide is, are there any habits that you have developed when using the unit that may contribute to the problem of rapid battery deterioration.

When you are using the unit, do you leave turned on for long periods in between reading sessions?
When you finish using the unit, do you switch off by gently sliding the off switch or do you completely turn it off by sliding the switch to the right and holding it for 2-3 seconds?
When you charge the battery, are you confident that the battery is fully charged before disconnecting? (The handbook will help to describe when this state is achieved.)

I guess you are using the unit properly in which case it is almost certain that it is a hardware / software problem and needs to be returned. If you go this route you probably either need a new battery or if the hardware is faulty, a replacement unit.

Despite the problems you are experiencing, I have to say that the normal cycle between charges of my PRS-600 is not as long as I expected or hoped. In my case, this is about 5-8 days of steady use at about 1/2 to 1 hour per day.

My Sony ereader touch isn't charging. Pluging it in to either the computer or the wall charger, and the light doesn't go on. The screen is frozen on the last page it turned to.

Hi suebagnall,

If the redlight does not come on, try the following:

1. Connect the reader to the wall charger (make sure you use the Sony Charger ACS5220)
2. Hit the Reset button at the bottom of the reader
3. Check if the redlight comes on
4. If so, leave the reader charging for 15 minutes to see if it takes the charge
5. If this does not resolve the problem, probably you will need to contact Sony to get it repaired

Sony readers PRS 600 stuck on a page in the middle of a book and will not go forward or back, when I tried to reset it, it did not work and the screen got messed up.

This happened to me. Reset would not work, nor would the on/off switch. Although the reader appeared to be 50% charge, I tried to charge it for hours and even overnight, but the charge indicator did not move. In the end, I disconnected the charger and abandoned the reader. The next day I looked at it and the charge indicator indicated 100% charge and I was able to switch off the reader and then use it normally. So it might be worth charging the reader even if you can't tell it is charging, then leaving it for a day and coming back to it. Worked for me.

My Sony reader prs-600 is frozen. The reset button doesn't do anything. How do I unfreeze it? A part of my screen still works, but a big part doesn't. What can i do?

Try holding the reset for 5-10 seconds, then flip the power switch quickly, three times. If this doesn't work, check the light next to the power switch. If it is flashing yellow, follow the same process. It might take up to three tries.

My battery drains within 1 day on my sony prs-600.

1. Connect the Reader to a different USB port of the Computer. 2. Connect the Reader directly to the USB port of the Computer; dont use any USB hub or adaptor to connect the Readr to the Comp. 3. Disconnect the Reader and then press the RESET button. 4. Try connecting the Reader to a different Computer to check whether the USB port of the Computer is working properly. 5. If the issue still persists, service may be required. Follow the below link to initiate the repair: http://eservice.sony.com/

Sony PRS-600 permanently 'Restarting' so I can't use it. What can be done?

Please check whether the Reader is fully charged. Connect the Reader to the Computer and keep it connected at least 4 hours to get it fully charged. If the issue still persists, perform a soft reset. To soft reset the Reader, press the RESET button using a sharp-pointed object. That should resolve the issue.
