The problem is the dryer coils are failing. They tend to fail as they heat up. They are inexpensive and easy to replace. Here is a video at that should help troubleshooting a gas dryer.

1. Does it have electric power? Is the breaker or fuse good? Is the power plug loose?
2. Is the door to the dryer ajar? Please open and close it a few times to check this.

If this doesn't help, you may need new or repaired parts. The timer motor that turns the dryer switch may have failed. The clutch that allows you to turn the select knob for the different dryer cycles may be slipping and have failed. The start button that begins the dryer cycle may have failed after a temporary power outage. The door switch may have failed. The particular switch in the dryer cycle setting you are using may have failed (Other cycles may still work). The dryer thermostat(s) may have failed (prevents too hot/ over-heating). Follow the wires from the "heat selection switch" to find thermostat(s) in the hot air duct. They "turn ON" when too cool and "turn OFF" when hot enough. Mechanical switch contacts can "melt together" and stay always ON. Or switches can get pitted and stay "always OFF" after enough ON/OFF cycles. If pitted contacts happen, you can see this on them. Sometimes a finger nail file (I do not recommend a metal one) can shine them up again. Solid state (electronic) switches have to be tested with a meter or something else to see failure. Please don't do work on electrical or any other problems while the dryer is plugged in or still hot. Good luck. Your mileage may vary. ;-)

Failed element most likely, particularly if the machine has had a lot of use. (There's not much in a dryer, beyond a motor / fan, belt, drum, timer and the heating element). A simple resistance check across the element will prove the failure of the element.

You have an airflow restriction and it's most likely in the vent inside the wall leading outside. I know this because the dryer is trying to do its' job (and that the default "fail" mode on the t'stats is "open". That is to say... if a t'stat fails, the dryer won't heat).

The only other thing that causes an overheat condition is a failed blower assy. When these fail, though, the dryer makes an awful racket. And since you didn't mention an awful racket, I go with clogged vent pipes in the walls.

When my customers call who have the same symptoms as you, I don't even bother running the service call (costs me money, but I'm an honest guy). I recommend they call a dryer vent service or a chimney sweep service.

P.S. The way to test my diagnosis is simple. Disconnect the dryer vent from the wall and start the dryer. That's it! You'll see the dryer will function normally.

with power disconnected
if any wire disconnected before any test, reconnect & test dryer, reconnect wires after each test
disconnect wires from start button and test, conduct when pushed, no conduct when release
if fail replace start button test dryer
disconnect wires from door switch and test, conduct when pushed, no conduct when release
if fail replace door switch test dryer
follow leads from start button to relay(relay is first device connected to start button), and make sure all wires connected at both ends. If any wires disconnected, test dryer
locate thermostats and thermal fuses on fan housing and ducts
individually disconnect wires from each and test. conduct good, no conduct fail
replace any failed thermal fuse or thermostat test dryer
if all prior test OK
replace relay, test dryer
