I found the following on another website. I don't know if it's true.
One thing unique about Android phones is their pattern unlocking system. However, after a number of unsuccessful tries, it will lock you out permanently. This happened to my brother, and it wouldn't accept his gmail username and password (the only other login method). He was looking at a reset and loss of all his data not stored in his Google account. Luckily, he found a work around. If you enter your gmail account name, and use "null" as the password, it will enable the pattern unlock again.
This may give you a chance to try different patterns until you find the one you set.
