Do you have access to the area of the igniter and s it clean and free of rust and debris? How about the distance from the igniter tip to burner hole ( jet)? Is it the same as the other burners and is the spark the same intensity as the other igniters?

  • Anonymous Dec 16, 2010

the distance is the same and 1 of the burners works occasionally....i am not sure if the spark is as intense on the failing burners...

There is likely a buildup of crud inside of the gas unit - this can best be cleared with a toothpick poked into the gas jet holes - specifically the holes in front of the igniter. It is also likely the igniter is sparking, but not enough to light up the gas. Theoretically, very little spark is needed to light propane - but I think we've both seen that as not such a practical theory!! If cleaning out the holes ( I would also remove the burner and shake out the crud ) doesn't work, then I would consider replacing the igniter. It is not difficult to replace and your local BBQ store should have igniters in stock. Take the old igniter with you to match it up, to be sure you get the right configuration for your Q. Best of luck in this and Merry Christmas - AND thanks for using Fixya!!

Kenmore gas range when no clicking when turning the oven on

Get FREE Standard Shipping on orders of $100 or more. Details
Range: Gas burner won't spark or ignite A surface burner igniter switch and a spark module activate the spark electrode when a burner is turned to the "Lite" position on a gas range's cooktop. If the surface burner switch, spark module or wiring in that circuit fails, the spark electrode won't work, and as a result the gas burner won't light. If those components work but the electrode won't spark, the problem could be that the spark electrode is coated with spilled food of is bent or broken. In addition, the electrode won't spark or ignite the burner properly if the ceramic insulation sleeve below the tip of the electrode is cracked or broken. If the gas burner isn't lighting, these repairs may help.

Replace the spark igniter electrode

1396454293470.jpg The spark igniter electrode-also called the surface burner igniter-is an insulated electrode that provides an ignition spark to light a surface gas burner. It sparks and makes a ticking sound when the burner switch is turned to the Lite position. Replace the spark ignition electrode if it fails to spark or if the ceramic insulation sleeve is cracked or chipped. How to Replace a Spark Igniter Electrode in a Gas Range Find This Part

Replace the surface spark module

1377098014986.jpg The surface spark module is in the ignition circuit for the gas surface burners. When a surface burner control knob is turned to the "Lite" position, it provides voltage to the spark electrodes on the gas surface burners. If the surface spark module fails to provide the electrodes with voltage, then it should be replaced. Find This Part

Replace the spark igniter switch

1396454315355.jpg The igniter switch is an electrical switch on the stem of the gas surface burner control valve. This switch completes a circuit to the surface burner spark module, causing the burner igniters to spark when the burner switch is turned to the Lite position. Replace the burner igniter switch if the burners don't spark when you turn the burner control knob to the Lite position or if igniters spark constantly even when the burner knobs are in the Off position.

Front right burner will not ignite

I'd get a briquette lighter down in there when you turn it on and try to light it manually. If it does not light, it is a gas supply problem (bad valve or control), and time to call appliance guy. If it does light, the spark path over to the burner may just be plugged with something. If you have gas + spark, but no fire, it almost has to be that the spark can't reach the gas for some reason. That usually comes from something being plugged up.

1 IGNITER ON MY FRIGIDAIRE STOVE TOP SNAPS BUT DOES NOT LITE I DO HAVE GAS PRESENT

If the other burners are working and you hear gas and the sparking working, the burner may be clogged. This happened to me when some soup boiled over one time. Try lighting it manually. i.e. Hold a lighter, preferably one with long stem, while slowly turning on the burner. If the burner is clogged, you may need to hold the lighter in different places. If this succeeds, let it burn for a couple minutes and this may clear the burner. If it still doesn't work you will need to clean the burner. Most of the time the front and back burners share a sparker. Good luck and let us know how if this has sparked a solution.

Rotisserie burner won't light

It could be a dirty or inop spark electrode. Also could be weak batteries in the spark igniter.

Before you start you should make sure that the ignition system has fresh batteries. The batteries are usually located within the igniter button but not always. Some BBQs will have a battery pack located somewhere on the BBQ and others you can remove the igniter button by turning it left to reveal the battery.

First verify that the rotisserie burner can be lit manually. Take a BBQ lighter or long stick match and then put the flame right at the base of the burner where the electrode is and then slowly turn on the burner valve. It should light within four seconds. If it does not then shut the burner off and check for any restrictions in the gas line for the burner.

If it does light with a match then the spark electrode could be dirty, out of position or simply the wire for the ignition system is loose. Press the igniter button and watch the electrode for a good bright spark at the burner. If you do not see any spark you can verify that the igniter wire has not come loose and also gently adjust the position of the electrode end a little bit closer to the burner using a pair of needle nose pliers(It should not be touching the burner). It does not need to touch the burner but have a really small gap.You can use a small wire brush to gently clean the electrode of any debris that might be causing a weak or no spark

If you are unable to remedy the non-spark issue all is not lost. You can still use the manual lighting procedure I described to light the burner. And remember to be careful when trying these procedures. I do not want you to get injured from delayed gas ignition. Be careful and have a safe holiday.

Burners aren't burning. There is gas and sparking but no light

burners arent liting?? if htere is gas to teh burner you should be able to light with a match and/ or bbq lighter, at least this will get you throough the holiday,i would look closely at eh electrode"spark source" next to burner, iff need be gently clean tip of electrode with an emory board, if there is carbon build up on tip its possible to interfere with igniton

Gas not igniting

aknot, make sure each burner cap has a good ground to the burner. You can use some light sandpaper to scrub them. Where the burner fits around the ignitor is a small orfice. Use a paper clip or small sharp object to clean out the orfice. Try this first. Catriver..post back.
