The
Windows XP registry is your computer's repository for system settings
and configuration data. Over time, the registry can become bloated and
even corrupted. Problems with the registry can slow down your computer
and cause programs to malfunction. To maintain a clean, healthy system,
you should periodically scan your registry for errors and fix them when
found. You could do this manually, but Microsoft suggests that you use
registry cleaning software instead. These programs can be downloaded
from the Internet. Before you make any changes to the registry, back it up first.

Click the Windows XP "Start Menu", type regedit and press "Enter". The registry window will open.

Click "file" (at the top of the window) and select "Export". You can choose any name that is easy to remember.

Type a name for the registry file that you want to
create and click "Save". A copy of your registry will be saved to that
file. If problems occur after you clean your registry, you can restore
your Windows XP registry by double-clicking the file that you saved. It
will have a file extension of reg. Be sure to remember where you save
the file.

Fix the Registry

Download a registry cleaning program, such as CCleaner
or nCleaner, and install it. These programs are specifically designed to
clean and fix your registry. You can find links for this in the
Resources section.

Run the program's "Scan for errors" function. The
software will locate any problems that it finds and display a list along
with recommendations for proceeding. This intermediate step enables you
to view any errors before you fix them. All registry cleaners may not
have a button that says "Scan for errors", but they will have one that
performs the task. See your program's documentation for details.

Decide on a cleaning option. Some registry cleaners have
an "auto-clean" button. Pressing this will automatically repair all
errors shown on the error list. PC World suggests that you never select
that auto-clean option. Instead, review the list of changes and select
the ones recommended by the software.

Click the program's repair button to fix the registry.
The software will repair the registry and show you a list of corrections
when it is finished.

Tips & Warnings
- Many registry
cleaners exist. Some of them perform remarkably well while others are
only partially good at finding errors. Check the Internet for reviews
and recommendations when choosing one to download. You can find many
excellent free cleaners as well.
