You should take Tech 48s advice. Don't chase your shadow on this Its dead, dead and even more dead. RCA doesn't make anything anymore they just buy rights to put their label on products. No telling who made that unit you own, so get it replaced if you can otherwise. You don't have much choice. Sorry
Worldvet
Have you tried a reset? The following was taken from pg 26 of the manual:
Which you can download here if you need it: http://support.rcaaudiovideo.com/manual.aspx?product=392
The player cannot be turned on.
• Battery is empty.
• Ensure the keys lock is not activated.
• Reset the player by pressing and holding /
MENU for more than 10 seconds.
• If the player still cannot be turned on after
resetting, perform a firmware upgrade to restore
it.
• Please go to www.rcaaudiovideo.com for more
details.
Player does not respond to key presses.
• If your player stops responding to key presses,
you can reset it by pressing and holding /
MENU for more than 10 seconds. Most of your
settings will be preserved; only the settings that
you have changed after your last power off will
be lost.
• This player may temporarily cease to function if
subjected to electrostatic disturbance.
To resume normal operation, it may be
necessary to cycle the power off and back on or
you can reset it by pressing and holding /
MENU for more than 10 seconds.
Hope this helps
HI,
Try connecting your player
to another USB port. Using one port all the time to connect and
disconnect USB items a port can develop a range of files associated
with configuring the USB connection. Some of these files might actually
have been from your player connected before, or some of these
configurations could be from other USB items you connect to this port.
Changing ports can often lead to an immediate good connection simply
because ther are no conflicting configuration files. If this does not
solve your problem, we can now entertain the next process to try.
THIS
IS A BIG ONE. This is the last thing to do. Before you try this
process, please complete a full back up of your system. This is
important as the next step can have side effects you did not entirely
expect. AND Second, you might need your XP Install Disk (not in all
cases). What this process is about is renewing all hardware/software
configurations relating to USB connections.
Here is what you do:
1. Right click MY COMPUTER
2. Select PROPERTIES
3. Select HARDWARE
4. Select DEVICE MANAGER
5. Select UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLLERS
6. Right click on each USB CONTROLLER and select Uninstall
7. Uninstall all entries
8. Reboot your computer
9. As your computer re-boots it will reinstall all USB connections it detects.
THEN, when all other USB items have been configured and connected by the system, you then should try connecting your USB Player.
If
these suggestions are implemented and you are still have connection
difficulties with your computer, there are several other things to try.
If you have another XP Computer you should try connecting your player
to another computer to see if the problem is a player problem or not.
If it still has this problem with the next computer, it maybe be a
fault of the player.
IF YOU HAVE COMPLETED ALL the above
mentioned and still have a problem, you should next contact the seller
of this machine for further instructions of what to do next.
Check whether other usb device is detected like pendrive. if it is detected then the problem is in your mp3 player. if not then let me know, i will provide alternative...
I am sorry to tell you but it has a electronic problem most likely witht he control IC (micro). No resets or new battery will help.
and the even worse news is that RCA does not offer repair parts for any of its audio equipment any longer. I work at an authorized RCA repair center and can say with confidence that unless it is under warranty, it can not be fixed. If it is under warranty, it can be exchanged for a new one, if you need the comtact numbers for RCA reguarding warranty returns, please let me know.
All RCA audio equipment under warranty is now exchange only.
I am sorry for such bad news, but you can check with any authorized RCA warranty center and they can verifiy what I have said.
If you would like to respond to me, please start your post with "To Tech48" ot "To Dave"
Thanks and if I can help you further let me know.
Dave
If you have had it for only 2 months, it is under the RCA warranty. I strongly urge you to take it back to where you bought it and get it exchanged. If they tell you they can't exchange it, I can give you the address to the place that will exchange it.
If you open it up and try to repair it yourself, it will void the warranty. That is something that is stated in the warranty agreement.
I can tell by your description of the problem and all you have done so far that this unit will not be repaired by anybody. I wish I were wrong to, but 17 plus years of working on electronics at a component level tells me otherwise.
Thanks,
Dave
Hi BigSteve,
If, and/or when, you find out that I was right, it would be appreciated if you accept my solution. I really do hope I am wrong, for your sake. But if you need an address to send it to RCA I can supply that for you.
Several of the solutions that have been offered to you by other experts are good valid solutions, especially the one offered by "PyroPCMan" (it's your best chance of making it work again), but if they don't work, there is really no other options to get this thing working.
Although it may not be the solution you had hoped for, this would still the correct solution in the end if nothing else works.
Thanks,
Dave

The following solution might be applicable:
1) Try using a shorter USB cable.
2)
Try plug in the device to the back of your computer instead of the
front USB port (this is because some computers don't have enough power
in the front USB ports)
3) Some USB 2.0 device are not backward compatible with USB 1.1
ports. Try plugging in with USB 1.1 and 2.0 port to see that's the
cause of the problem.
4) Try downgrade all your USB port from 2.0 down to 1.1, you can do that in your BIOS.
5) if all failed, try the USB device on a different computer. Then
you can determine if the USB device or the USB port is the culprit of
the problem also
If that will be the case you can check to RAC if they can replace the battery because you need this MP3 player to be on in order for you computer to detect it and for you also to be able to do a software update, if they cannot replace the battery you may need to have it replace with them..
Hope that helps........
If you already trid connecting this MP3 to another pc and still not detected there will be no option that you can update the software of it...so better have it replace because in updating it also require having your battery working fine..
So that's really a problem with your MP3 player so I strongly recommend you to replace it already...

Even with a dead battery, windows should still see and recognize the hardware. Battery isn't the problem. Thanks for trying to help tho. It is appreciated
Trying a different usb port didn't help either. Thanks anyway
Thanks Tech_48 for responding. I hope that you are wrong, though I have a bad feeling that you're not. I'm not giving up on this so easily though. I've only had it about 2 months
Other usb devices were detected. So problem is not in usb port. Thanks. Anyway
ive tried the press play and power button and nothing
