Intermittent Connectivity:

NOTE: Before following the steps in this article, check if your wireless computers have stable connection when connected to other wireless networks (hotspots).

This article assumes that all wireless computers are experiencing intermittent wireless connection with the router.

Frequent wireless disconnection can be caused by different factors such as:

  1. Wireless interference within the network.
  2. Wireless settings of the router are still set to default.
  3. Firmware is corrupted.

Reducing Wireless Interference

If you are experiencing frequent disconnection from the wireless network, it helps if you check the following factors, all of which can greatly affect your wireless signals:

your cordless telephone system (or even your neighbors'), or other nearby equipment. Try to change your router's channel to 1 or 11 (the default channel is 6) and restart the wireless computers.

Physical obstructions: Your router or wireless computers may be losing connectivity because of physical obstacles such as walls and floors. Try to move the equipment to different locations to find a better link.

  • Placement of the router: MFG suggests that you place your router as high off the ground as possible. When placing the router in a high location, leave a distance of two feet between the router antenna tips, ceiling, and wall. If your signal passes through multiple floors, place the router on the upper-most floor, and high up in the room.
  • Surroundings: Keep the router away from large metal objects, bodies of water (fish tanks, bathrooms), and any electrical equipment including television sets, microwaves, radios, etc.
Customizing Wireless Settings of the Router
Having default wireless settings on the router may cause conflict with other routers within your network range. MFG suggests changing the SSID (network name) and the Wireless Channel of your router. Also, if it is possible, enable the Wireless Security of your router.
NOTE: If the wireless connection remains unstable after performing the steps above, upgrade the router

I keep losing the internet

CONTINUAL DISCONNECTION OF WIRELESS CONNECTION
There are a few things that can cause you to lose wireless connection with your wireless router. 1. Weak signal strength, check the signal strength on your wireless card. If it is weak move the wireless router away from brick or concrete walls and if possible locate the wireless router higher up. 2. Have you secured your wireless router from people near your from unauthorized access? i.e. change the default password, setup encryption use WPA2 or WPA, change the default SSID, and turn off SSID broadcast, and for added protection, enable MAC address filtering which allows only the MAC address/es of your wireless card/s to connect to your wireless router. 3. You could be getting interference from electrical sources such as air conditioners, arc welders, washing machines etc. If so, the power supply to the wireless routers and computers etc should be connected to a surge protection power board, better still connect your computer equipment to an UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply). 4. Check the channels of the wireless routers and access points in your area and change the broadcast channel on your wireless router to an unused channel or one that is currently used but has the weakest signal strength. This will minimize interference with your wireless router from other wireless routers and access points in your area.

Can i change the frequency on this router it is interfearing with my security system

http://broadband.motorola.com/consumers/products/sbg900/downloads/sbg900_user_guide.pdf is a pdf of your manual. On page 71 it shows a menu that allows you to select a channel.
"Channel" is another name for frequency. It probably defaults to channel 1, try setting it to channel 11. Or channel 6.

Can I use my router just as a Wireless router with a DSL .

i doubt it will work. most times the cable companies give you a modem/router all in one box. the problem is there in no inbound connection to recieve an internet signal other than the cable cord connection. with the dsl modem you will need a seperate router. they cost around $40-50 on avg

Can't connect to my wireless

I had the exact same problem w/ the Motorola SBG900 Modem/Roter combo. I used to be able to connect to my wireless laptop and then all of a sudden it just wouldn't anymore. So I finally called Motorola and one of their techs (who's like a genius or something) walked me through this complicated procedure for resetting the SBG900 at my desktop and, after, even helped me to connect to my wireless laptop. SWEET! Don't waste your time trying these internet solutions. Call Motorola tech support at (877) 466-8646. They're open unitl 1AM Pacific Time.

Good Luck,
Chris from Cali
