Streaking on outbound faxes is due to a dirty optics assembly. In order to correct the issue, you must open the fax (just lift up the front cover) and clean the area that scans the paper as they become dirty with paper dust and dirt.

Ever since i brought my HP 1040 fax machine i can

it may possible that you have a DSL conn. for internet & phone line.
In DSL conn. we need a DSL filter to be fitted in ur DSL line,so that you can get a analog line for fax/voice calls.

And if you have a VOIP conn. then plz contact HP technical support.
