Firefox's original claim to fame was that it didn't support ActiveX controls like Internet Explorer does. As a result, it wasn't as easy to get viruses and other malware from malicious websites. Also, when it first came out, Firefox offered features IE didn't have then (such as tabbed browsing). It was leaner and faster than IE. But later versions of Firefox have (in my opinion) gotten bloated, and (I hate to say it about a Microsoft product) IE has improved its operation. I'm not sure that changing from IE to Firefox is the big deal it used to be, unless you just want to get away from Microsoft.

You can read all about Firefox at their site here. If you decide you want to try it, you just have to click the download tab, install the program and start using it. There's no reason you can't have both browsers on your computer so you can compare them.

As for the computer being slow, your browser won't help that. The browser is just a program that displays web pages, but doesn't have anything to do with the routine operation of your computer. The slow computer is an issue that needs to be taken care of separately.

There are several things that can make your computer slow. Number one is memory (RAM). If your computer is a few years old, it may have as little as 256MB or 512MB of RAM. This is barely enough to let Windows run, and it's all the manufacturers used to install. If your computer doesn't already have it, you should consider installing at least 1GB or more if the system board supports it. Giving more memory to Windows is the easiest way to gain some speed since it lets Windows work more efficiently.

There's also a chance you have some malware at work on your computer. Slow operation and weird behavior when online are often signs that something's running that shouldn't be. A program like MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware can scan for and probably remove anything nasty.

Some general housekeeping would probably help a bit. Uninstalling unused applications, cleaning out temporary files and your browser cache and defragmenting your hard drive are all helpful maintenance steps. BleepingComputer.com, a site devoted to helping get rid of malware, has this page which explains some of the causes of and fixes for a slow computer.

As a last resort, you can reinstall your original factory software if you have a recovery disc set, or put on a fresh copy of Windows. Sometimes, if your computer has been infected with something, or something in Windows has gotten badly corrupted, it's the only way to completely repair the system. But it's inconvenient since you lose everything, which is why it's the last resort.

Full list of Mozilla Firefox Hacks for Browser and Addons

These are a few of my favourite hacks for Mozilla Firefox 3 all of these will be saved in the prefs.js file and can be altered either using the about:config method in the browser or by using a combination of the Edit my Config extension XPI and the Yaldex Software Free JavaScript Editor
always make sure that you create a BUP first before any changes.

browser.cache.disk.capacity » 150000
browser.cache.memory.capacity » 150000
This will set the maximum disk space and memory for the browser's cache to ~150Mb

browser.cache.offline.capacity » 20480
browser.cache.memory.enable » false
Forcing Firefox to disable the cache but also to keep it self-contained.
(this will make pages that you visit often to be slow and stay slow, though so be careful)

browser.download.manager.closeWhenDone » true
browser.search.openintab » true
So that the searches from the search bar go into a new tab instead of the current one.
browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground » true
This forces Firefox to open new links in the background so that it doesn't steal focus from the page I am still trying to read!
browser.tabs.opentabfor.middleclick » false
browser.tabs.tabMinWidthset » 0
Disables tab scrolling, otherwise you can set it to the minimum allowable width of a tab (in pixels) before tab scrolling comes in.

To remove that Go button you never use anyway.
browser.urlbar.maxRichResults » 5
browser.urlbar.autoFill » true

The higher the number the higher the memory, so I set this to 1 because I still seem to close tabs accidentally, but usually only 1

Setting to 0 saves about 4Mb of cache per page, but slows things down for back/forward operations.

Firefox error for a week (msg is below). IE works but how can I firefox? Unable to connect Firefox can't establish a connection...

Hi

You don't say which operating system you are using.

It sounds as if something has affected, changed or corrupted your Firefox Browser settings.

Uninstall firefox and all its components from add or remove programs > restart computer > use IE to log on and download and install the latest version of Firefox, watching out for any firewall permission boxes > test firefox and set it as the Default Browser, if you want to.

start > Control Panel > (Add or Remove) Programs > (uninstall a program) > highlight Firefox > Remove all its components > restart computer.

Remeber to regularly downlad and install upgrades, updates andsecurity patches for both browsers to protect from malware.

Download and install good Spyware and Browser protection software such as, for added protection:

Malwarebytes (www.malwarebytes.org)

SuperAntispyware (www.superantispyware.com)

I hope this helps.

. hello, how is it going, im a fixya team member

The firefox people have a fantastic support service. So I recommend going to the following page:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox%20will%20not%20start?s=Firefox+will+not+load&as=s
Also, if that much memory is being used by firefox it means you have too many cookies(too much memory stored) that are slowing down the process. I recommend that you use CCleaner to clean out your computer. Loading a web browser is a simple task for a computer so there may be more underlying problems. I recommend the following products to clean up all of the junk that may be stored on your computer:
1. CCleaner(to clean up all the clutter) download.cnet.com/ccleaner
2. Microsoft Security Essentials(to keep your computer secure)
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security_essentials/default.aspx
3. Revo Uninstaller(to get rid of unnecessary programs that may be slowing you down)
http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html
Try using these tools to speed up your computer and utilize Mozilla's support page more effectively(IT HAS ALL THE ANSWERS!)

I have a very slow modem TFM-560U Trendnet it was working ok before i have w7 , ie9 or firefox4 really bad i did a restore from w7 sp1, no change

A slow running Firefox can be fixed by:

Uninstall unwanted add-ons:

First thing that you should do to fix Mozilla Firefox slowis to uninstall unwanted add-ons installed. Some websites forcefully installtoolbars or add-ons that cause your browser to crash often.

Scan System for viruses:

If you don't have antivirus installed on your system thenmalware can intercept smooth communication of browser and operating system. Also make sure that antivirus program that you are using is updated. Rememberto clean your system with some powerful antivirus program.

Fix Windows Registry:

Browser related setting is stored in the registry databaseof operating system. You may receive various problems when registry entriesrelated to browser are corrupted, missing or damaged.

There are two methods to fix this problem. One of them isto manually modify your registry and another is to use third party registrycleaner and PC optimizer software. Manual modification is not recommended as itis complicated. You may opt for second method that is to use third partyregistry cleaner and PC optimizer.

Update Drivers:

If Mozilla is slow it could be your outdated driverscausing problem. To solve this problem, update your device drivers. Here aresteps to do so:

1. Right click on My Computer.
2. Select properties in the dropdown.
3. Click on Hardware Tab.
4. Now click on Device Manager.
5. Select the device, note down its name.

Changed some things on BIOS to remove McAfee virus protection program because the computer was running slow. Now even my internet program (Mozilla Firefox) will not even download updates. I am not sure...

A slow running computer can be fixed by:

-- cleaning system junk
-- optimizing computer services
-- repairing registry
-- defraging registry
-- clearing browsers junk

do these things with some secure tool such as Intel Software Partner Reginout.

Anyway, what are those things you have changed w.r.t BIOS? Make sure that you have removed McAfee completely through control panel.

DOES NORTON MAKE A COMPUTER SLOW MY COMPUTRER IS REALLY SLOW AND SOMEONE TOLD ME THAT IS ONE OF THE REASONS AND TO USE A DIFFERENT SECURITY AND SOME ONE ELSE SAID TO CHANGE MY BROSER DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO...

You are caught between a rock and a hard place.

Norton, and ALL security software use a fair amount of resources. They are there to protect you.

You cannot expect a good and constant monitoring program to be light, unless you use a low quality security program that is near useless.

I wish these programs were also smaller, but with today's severe threats, we need severe protection.

Please put up with Norton or you may download free security programs which are excellent from this link: -

Firefox is slow to open and getting a lot of error messages saying websites are not a valid url.

Here are some steps follow it to resolve your issue:
1. Uninstall the latest buggy Skype plug-in: If you are experiencing that Facebook, GMail or Google Reader are really crawling and you’ve recently updated Skype to version 4.1 and installed the Skype plug-in for Firefox, try uninstalling the Skype plug-in, but leave the main Skype program installed. That should help. Hopefully, Skype will update this plug-in soon because, reading the tweets on slow firefox, it’s certainly responsible for driving a number of people away to other browsers, particularly Chrome.
2. Check how much memory Firefox is using: Bring up Windows Task Manager with Ctrl-Alt-Del in Windows XP or Crtl-Alt-Esc in Vista and go to the Processes tab. Look for the process called firefox.exe and check the memory usage: for example, 230,000K is 230MB. Try cutting back on the number of tabs you have open and uninstall any plug-ins you really don’t need and see if this brings down memory usage. If you’re anything like me, you’ll have installed plug-ins which seemed a good idea at the time but which you now rarely, if ever use. Uninstall them.
3. Do some maintenance: Use a program like CCleaner (for Windows) or BleachBit (for Windows or Linux) to clear your browser temporary files, internet cache and browser history regularly.
4. Modify the Firefox config file: Here’s some tweaks which involve modifying the config file for Firefox. I’d heard some of these a while ago on the Mike Tech Show podcast, also at Life Rocks 2.0. It’s not difficult to edit the config file. Just type about:config in the Firefox address bar and press enter. Then type network.http in the filter field. This will filter the list down to only those with network.http in the name. Now make the following changes:
  • Double click on ‘network.http.pipelining’ and set the value to true (double clicking toggles the value between true and false).
  • Double click on network.http.pipelining.maxrequests’ and in the dialog box enter a value higher than the default value 4. According to Mozillazine, the maximum you can use is 8.
  • Double click on ‘network.http.proxy.pipelining’ and set the value to true.
  • Again in the filter field enter ‘browser.sessionstore.interval‘ (without the quotes), double click on the entry and change the value from 10000 (10 secs) to 120000 (2 minutes). This adjusts how frequently Firefox creates session restore save points. Firefox will now take a snapshot of your browsing session every 2 minutes instead of every 10 seconds.
  • Right click on the page and select New->Integer. Enter the name nglayout.initialpaint.delay and then click ok. Set the integer value of this to 0 and click ok.
You can find additional great config file tweaks at Technically Personal.
5. Disable Firebug: If you’re using Firebug, it can slow Firefox to a crawl.
6. Optimize Firefox’s SQL database: Firefox uses SQLite databases to store lots of its settings. With time, the databases grow and Firefox slows down. Use either Vacuum Places Improved, a Firefox add-on, or SpeedyFox, a stand-alone app to compact these databases without losing any data. I prefer SpeedyFox as I like to keep the number of Firefox add-ons to a minimum. Only works in Windows at the moment though. Thanks again to Life Rocks 2.0 for this tip. I also use the portable version which doesn’t modify the Windows registry.
7. If you’re still not happy with Firefox, there’s a terrific Firefox Troubleshooting Guide over on MakeUseOf.com. And have a look at this post at Dedoimedo for more suggestions.
8. And if you’re still not happy, try Google Chrome – it’s a worthy alternative to Firefox.
