I live in Australia and therefore are unable to use the alltel. i therefore need to unlock my phone.

You need to contact the provider with with the phone is locked and get an unlock code.
As many other recent phones your model can be unlocked only with the unlock code, to get the unlock code you need to call the customer service of the company that originally locked the phone, providing them your model number. They will give you an unlock code to release the phone.
To contact Alltel you can use the form here. If your phone is still under contract binding with Alltel they can refuse to give you the unlock codes.
Unfortunately many new phones cannot be unlocked without a code kept in a database managed from provider.
Some company like this one provide an hacking service for many models for a small fee.

I must be honest and say that it was not the breakthrough I was hoping for. I fact it is something that I have already tried.
I have used the Alltel ' most complicated email service in the world system'
Now I have tried to call them. I know that they are situated in Little Rock but all I know about Little Rock is from the Munroe movie.
They use an 1800 number which in Australia means free call from anywhere. Didn't work. I found the Little Rock area code and got phone message 'no longer connected'
My S/N number is ht601e601518. If you could contact Alltel or let me know how to do it I would be very grateful and you could truly wear the title of Guru. (more inspiring than contact the manufacturer)
