I have only had my Nesco food dryer for one year and have loved it. I was drying tomatoes today and it just quit during the middle of drying them, I let it cool down for a couple of hours but it still will not start. It is a NESCO Professional Food and Jerky Dehydrator. What shall I do? Have apples and more tomatoes left to dry.
Thanks Terrie

They aren't supposed to get hot. A dehydrator blows ambient cool air across the food to dry it. Heat would cause food borne pathogens to grow causing food poisoning. Wow, this one does. As a Food Safety Trainer, I find this very worrying!
These Nesco dehydrators have a bi-metal thermostat. The surface of the contacts will sometimes corrode and stick together or short with the corrosion. It can be intermittent. This causes the unit to heat to a high temperature. This causes solder to melt or the thermal fuse to blow. Take it apart and clean the contacts of the thermostat with fine sandpaper or thin file. If needed the replacement fuse is a 5x12mm, 235 degree 2.5 amp 250 volt thermal fuse available from Radio Shack online or at store. An ohm meter will tell you if the fuse is bad.

Usually fungus. You need to plant tomatoes where the sun will dry the overnight dew quickly each day. Don't water at night (water in the morning). Try to water the soil and not the leaves.
Ask your nursery for a fungicide (or if something else is causing yellow leaf in your area). They will know and guide you.
Best set to pull off the dead/yellow leaves to limit cross contamination and spread of the fungus/mold.
Hi, I have an instruction manual for the Snackmaster jr Dehydrator by American Harvest model TD20. If you are still needing a copy of it, I can photo copy it and mail it to you. Please let me know.
