Take the screws off the outer cover fo the wet end. That will expose the impeller.
At the other end of the pump is a small metal cap in the middle. Pry that off with a screwdriver. That reveals the shaft of the motor which has a slot in it. This allows you to hold the shaft still with a large screwdriver.
While someone holds the shaft with a big screwdriver, you rotate the impeller counter clockwise to unscrew it off the motor shaft.
In my case the impeller was so caked onto the shaft with rust that we could not loosen it. We broke the impeller and still could not unscrew it. The screwdriver keeps jumping out of the slot in the shaft.
So the next step was to take the shaft out of the motor. On the far end of the motor are 4 small looking bolt heads. Undo those. They go right through the motor into the 4 legs of the wet end.
Stand the motor up with the wet end up. Pull hard to pull the wet end motor cover off the motor and you will then have the wet end and armature of the motor in your hands. Heavy.
Place some wood into a large vice and then grip the big silver part of the armature in the vice. Then unscrew the impeller.

Motor hums but does not turn freely, can you turn the motor by removing the motor end cap?

no! You have to remove the pump end to find the shift, You may look between the pump and motor and find the shift splice and set screws that need to be tighted up.

I have a Waterway Spa Pump Executive 56 Frame 4hp Dual Speed PF-40-2N22C in a Catalina spa that recently developed an issue. The pump will not start in low speed, just makes a humming noise, but it will...

the problem with the sound is the bearings inside the motor are going out. i have the same pump and i have to replace the motor. replacing the bearings is very hard and will cost you about the same after you carry the motor and new bearings to a shop to be pressed in. hope this helps!!

The pump has been louder for a couple of weeks and after I stopped it to clean the spa filter, it won't start. Sounds likes it's seized

I had that happen when the spa was off for 10 days. I took the pump and wet end out, and managed to turn the shaft to free it. It has rusted up in place.
6 months later it started the loud noise and started getting worse - the motor bearing at the wet end was seizing up. I replaced motor and wet end just in time.

Spa Pump Executive 56 Frame 4hp Dual Speed 2" Intake 2" Discharge : My Executive 56 spa pump (1-l/2 years old) is leak...

Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

There is a seal in there that a local pump repair shop can fix for about $30 - $50 with parts and labor. Waterway pumps use a 1000 seal that is not a seal the homeowner is usually successful at replacing themselves.

If this answer does not fix your problem, please comment with additional details prior to rating the answer. Positive feedback is appreciated once your problem is solved!

How do i remove impellor

The impeller in my 4 HP, 2-speed Waterway Executive High Performance 56 pool & spa pump has a brass coupling embedded in the back side. This coupling can be unscrewed from the motor shaft by keeping the shaft from rotating while turning the impeller in the reverse direction. Then the seal can be tapped out.

REASSEMBLED WET END OF WATERWAY PF401A22C-LEAKS- NEED DIAGRAM

I've never seen a reassembly diagram for this particular pump but I'm guessing that you've installed the mechanical seal incorrectly.

Where is it leaking from exactly?

Kind Regards,
Ian Kime.
