A couple months ago, I had a Lasko box fan that shorted out. It had been rattling for months, and toward the end it became a lot quieter. The fan was old. There was a weird smell and I saw a spark inside the fan. I immediately unplugged it and part of the plug broke off inside the outlet. A couple people told me that there couldn't have been a fire because the fan and outlet both have something that will cut the circuit before there is a fire. I have another Lasko fan that I have been using since, also old. I have been fearing that it may also be on its way out but I want to use it as long as possible. Today I noticed a slight rattling, and the motor was hot. I cleaned some dust off the motor and after a while, it was rattling a little but the motor wasn't hot. How do I know when to stop using the fan and buy a new one so that I do not run it to the point of shorting out like the last one? I would like to use it as long as possible but do not want to run the risk of that happening again, and I am still afraid of a potential fire, though not a lot. What is the sure sign I should junk it before something dangerous or inconvenient happens? I don't want to throw it away if it still has life left in it but do not want to force it to run if it's life is already spent either.

These motors are not designed to be lubricated and have a "permawick" lubrication system. There is no oil port on the motor. Introducing flamable oil into the motor could be dangerous. The fan should be replaced.

Howdy,

If your fan is older, it may require oiling. On the motor you should see a hump, or a hole in the center of the housing, and then a small hole on the top side of the center of the housing. Inside is a wicking material which holds oil. When this dries out, you will notice the fan stops quicker and may take a while to get up to speed when you start it cold. Here's a video from a friend of mine on how to oil a fan. Yours should be similar to this.

Hi, my 20 in lasko wind tunnel fan is on the blink again.A few months ago I cleaned it & it wouldnt turn back on, finally after days of trying everything & even trying to reason with the thing-out of the...

Unfortunately, it could be a number of things. I assume you have tried something else in the same power point to see that power is there? If the unit is dead, it could be a safety device has tripped out. Check if there is a reset button or similar on the fan. If not, the fan will need to be taken apart to find out what it is. There may be a broken cable or loose wire.

Loud noises from Lasko fan motor?

The problem most likely lies within the fan motor of your Lasko unit. I just got fed up with my Lasko tower fan (model 2515) making a rumbling noise on and off and so I took apart the entire thing. I found the noise to be coming from the Decomin 2033014 motor in the unit. Took apart the motor and found that it is so cheap that it doesn't even have bearings! Just a few plastic discs on a spindle. I tried greasing the discs again but it didn't work. The only solution is to get a new motor. I am really disappointed in the quality of these Lasko fans.

Lasko 3723 burnt motor

sorry but you need to purchase a new fan.
some times the motor is not aline correctly and the rotor "part that spins the blade" rubs on the stator "the part with the copper wire:" the motor
over heat with the friction, then smoke followed by the coil burning.
