There is a infrared sensor on the front on the tv. It usually just looks like a small black plastic circle. If you look at the end of the remote it may have the same type of plastic or can be clear. Make sure both of those are clean and unobstructed. Make sure the batteries you put in are good (been caught that way with new dead batteries). You also want to confirm that you can easily change channels etc using the panel buttons. That helps to rule out the reciever sectio inside the tv.
Once you have done that, you are almost out of cheap, easy repairs. The next thing to do is replace the remote either with a new oem or a universal remote. This may or may not fix it. It depends if the problem is in the remote or if it is in the sensor section inside the tv.
If it is in the sensor section the tv would need to go into the shop for repairs. The problem is the cost. This IS covered under warrenty so check with the store you bought it from and get hold of Vizio to get in touch with thier repair depot. If you don't have any warrenty then you only want to get a repair estimate. You want to compare the estimated repair costs against a replacement tv. They may come out about the same. So that gives you the choices of a repaired tv, a new warrentied tv, or putting up with a grumpy remote. The repair cost on this if it is the sensor will be $100 to about $400 (and maybe up) depending on what needs ot be replaced. So it is definitly checking out replacment cost.
The remote is defective - the carbon pads that are used as contacts have worn out. Just buy a new remote, it will be way easier than trying to refurbish yours.
