Hi, Brown water and whitescale are often the result of the water you use in the iron... If you have scale, white vinegar will clean that... For brown water, empty the iron, rinse out the insides with bottled water, and then use the bottled water instead...

When empty, fill with white vinegar, let it heat up then hold the steam button down to let the vinegar run through the iron. Do this over the sink!! Then fill with water and repeat to rinse the vinegar out.
The vinegar will dissolve the mineral deposits in the iron.

If you have been using it for several years, you are using it correctly already. the fact that it still operates indicates that you use the proper sort of water in it (not using distilled water is the number one cause of failure in irons). How old is it?
Is it still under warrenty? if it is take it back to where you bought it.

Otherwise it sounds like the thermostat is broken. Wallmart has some very nice cheap irons.

Thankfully I was able to clean the boiler compartment, by unscrewing the large bolt on the boiler, cleaned with water only, loads of brown yuck came out, It would then not allow me to use the steamer, Waited until the next morning tried again and working brilliantly again.
