Garmin astro 220 gps dogtracker

Signal strength from sender units is only good for 30-50 meters. Should be good for 1000+meters.All batteries and antennas appear ok.

Garmin, it seems to me that your techs should be able to correct this problem by mounting the antenna in such a way as to place it in a fixed position where it could not be turned internally and cause damage to the unit with a force as small as hand tightening.

The antennas on the dog sender units had been over tightened, which resulted in the units internals being twisted and damaging the batterywiring. An easy fix once the units were disassembled and a lesson to be learnt: DON'T OVERTIGHTEN THE ANTENNAS ON THE DOG SENDER UNITS.

I own 15 garmin dc30 collars and when hunting they are spred out in no specific order over 3 astro 220 hand held units. I am having trouble receiving all of the collars. On one unit i may pick up for...

Hi, thanks for posting your Question..

At times you may experience Problems with a Garmin Astro DC30 Collar. I've heard And experienced reports of the following problems with Garmin DC 30 Collars

Before trying to do a Hard Reset for the Garmin Astro 220 DC30 Collar you should try and identify if it is the collar or the 220 Receiver. the easiest way you can do this is to check your Tracking System with another collar. If the second collar works fine then you can assume that you DC30 is not working as it should.

First i would Check all the basics, make sure the collar is charged.

I also would Delete and Re establish the Dog Collar in you system by going to the Dog List on the menu of the Astro 200, I would probably recommend Resetting the 220 receiver since it is much easier to reset that than the Collar.

Lastly, If these do not fix your problem you should try to "reset" the DC30 by

Removing the Back Plate (silver piece)

While Your looking at the connections for the two antennas, I would check to make sure there is nothing wrong with both the GPS antenna connection, and the VHF Antenna on the collar. Personally I carefully disconnect each and make sure they are both clean and free of Debris and Junk. (good Solid connection here will only help the performance of the collar) You can carefully use a brush or electronics contact cleaner for the VHF antenna (Screw mount) (See images below). I would not put anything into the SMP (square Antenna wire connector)

Removing the VHF Antenna on a DC30

Clean this before re-installing. Very Important to have a good Electrical connection3. Remove the Four Small Philips screws on the outside of the case to access the battery and electronics compartment. Very Carefully Disconnect the white battery connector from the board (see images below). Leave the battery Disconnected for about 15-20 minutes for a full reset, Reconnect it to the board.. (CAREFULLY) Here you Can see the battery Connector for the DC 30 Garmin

As you re-assemble the Garmin DC30, Clean all seals and clean antenna connections.

That is A Garmin DC30 Reset Instructions, and Many times when you are having Problems with Garmin DC30 collars this is the First step Garmin will ask you to do before sending them back.

Here is how to Mark a Location other than your location. For example You might want to mark the Tree before you get to it in case your dogs leave the tree. Most of the time If you are like myself You want to Scroll over and Hit the Mark Button, However that will just Mark Your current Location and not the location that your cursor is.

Here are the instructions To mark a location where your cursor is on your Astro 220.

Press map

Scroll the cursor over to the location you want to mark.

Press (ENTER) instead of pressing Mark.

If you press Mark it will mark your current location..

After you press enter.

It will either Select something that you've scrolled over and you should be able to save that as a Location, (Hint: you can change the name to what ever you want before you save it.)

Or if it doesn't select something it will say "no Map info at this point. Do You want to Mark a location here"

I know it's pretty confusing and counter intuitive, But that's how you can mark a location where you are not at.

If your Antenna's are not too OK,you can get a replacement from the below link:

Good luck and thanks for using fixya.

Garmin Astro 220 looses contact with dc30 collar and does not pick it back up. Why and what to do?

GPS SYSTEMS HAVE A TENDENCY TO LOSE CONNECTIVITY TO SATILLITES BECAUSE OF BAD WEATHER, CLOUD COVER, TUNNEL ENTRANCE, BAD OR NO POWER, BATTERY LIFE HAS BEEN EXPENDED, HAZARD OF ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE TO GPS SYSTEMS, AND IMPROPER VEHICLE MOUNTING AND HAND HELD POSITION. FREE SOLUTIONS 1. ALWAYS PLACE YOUR GPS DEVICE IN THE UPPERMOST PORTION OF YOUR VEHICLE SO THAT THE GPS SIGNAL MAY EASILY LOCATE YOUR DEVICE EVEN WHEN THE WEATHER IS BAD 2. KEEP YOUR BATTERY CHARGED ONLY WHEN IT NEEDS IT MOST AND AVOID CHARGING OFTEN 3. IF YOU OVERCHARGE YOUR GPS DEVICE, YOU WILL EXPERIENCE BATTERY LEAKAGE, WHICH CAN EAT AWAY AT YOUR CLOTHING, DESTROY YOUR DEVICE IN SECONDS, AND CAUSE DAMAGE TO YOUR VEHICLE SEATS 4. YOUR GPS DEVICE HAS A TENDENCY TO FREEZE BECAUSE OF THE SIM AND MEMORY CHIPS LOCATED WITHIN IT 5. YOU CAN FIX THE FREEZING PROBLEM BY REMOVING THE SIM CHIP AND MEMORY CHIP AND RESTARTING YOUR SYSTEM 6. OTHER FREEZE PROBLEMS OCCUR BECAUSE THE DEVICE IS COLD WHEN IT IS KEPT IN THE VEHICLE AND CHIP CREEK OCCURS WHERE THE DEVICES MICROCHIPS BECOME LOOSE AND TIGHTEND BECAUSE OF WARM AND COLDER AIR FLUCTUATIONS. IT IS BEST TO KEEP THE DEVICE IN A PURSE OR ON A TABLE WHERE IT IS NOT SUBJECT TO CONSTANT TEMP. CHANGE 7. PREVENTION OF ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE IS BEST SOLVED BY: interference from devices located nearby, and even a radio turned on and located really close to your unit. This is normally known as electromagnetic interference to electronics and is very common

I can't get the collar unit to charge.

Either the battery pack is faulty, or the charger is faulty. You can use a voltmeter to test the power coming from the charger.

Here is what happens a lot of times when folks first get their GPS units. Go into your tools and repair your problem. I would suggest to start everything all over again being slow and putting in what you want slow and correct. It will work. If you have to, re call Garmin customer service for more help. The Satalite has to find you. Be sure you are getting a Signal. Look at your signal strength and be sure you have a good fully charge up battery. Hope this helps.

Garmin Etrex Legend Cx - no signal

Have you tried upgrading the unit's software. Go to Garmin.com and download the latest software for your unit. This will sometimes fix satellite reception problems.
