First of all check if your ipod is set to auto sync. To check this you need to:
1. connect ipod
2. click on the ipod icon and see if 'manually mange music and videos' is unchecked.
3. if it is then go to the 'music' tab
4. Manually choose your artists, playlists, genres etc to download/sync music from itunes to ipod.
If by download you mean getting music from itunes store directly from ipod then go to Settings > Store and see if your account information is accurate and that you have rights to purchase music.
After verifying this you can go to music store and download your purchased music.
For one you can't download music from the computer to you iPod, that would be the other way around, You Upload music to your iPod,
In order to upload music to you iPod here are a few easy steps.
1. You can't use iPods like MP3 players e.g. drag and drop MP3 files into the drive.
2. In order to upload music to your iPod you will need to download iTunes on the Apple website.

3. When you have installed and opened iTunes the iPod will be recognized and put onto iTunes in the left sidebar.
4. Now all you need to do is put music onto iTunes and drag and drop the music in iTunes to the iPod column on the sidebar and it will sync and install the music.

You need to use itunes as your music management software and ipod management software. You can download the latest itunes version at www.apple.com/itunes.
From here you can purchase items through the itunes music store, or add your own music by adding files from your computer, or putting a cd in your computer and coppying it into itunes so you can put the songs on your ipod.
Download iTunes at apple.com/itunes Go to the iTunes store and register with Apple. Start Downloading music from iTunes. The music will be in your iTunes library after downloading the songs. Plug in your iPod to your computer. Drag the songs you want on your iPod to the name of your iPod on the left hand column. The music should be on your iPod.
