Is 12 volts getting to the coil,.check the ignition module under the cover,all the wires tight,check wire to the points,

I getting a intermittent spark on my 1985 harley davidson sportster. I will crank it over and there will be no spark at all and then out of the blue there will be a good spark or sometimes a week spark....

Sounds like you have a bad Hall effect sensor. It's the ignition pickup located down in the timer cavity on the right side of the engine. The cover with the "5" on it. You'll have to mark it's position so you can put the new one back in the exact same position. Then, you'll have to unplug and unpin the round connector on the wire coming out from under the engine. Replace the sensor and repin the plug. Make sure you make a drawing of what color wire goes in what position in the plug.
