To fix the high idle, replace the top oxygen sensor. I would drop the transmission pan and change the transmission filter. You can then check the old fluid for contamination and metal filings. Metal filings will clog the transmission filter and lead to low pressure that would cause delayed shifts

transmission worked fine just before we R&R the motor, does this model of vehicles transmission shift with the assistance of vacuum? we have a cracked vacuum line and when we pulled it off while the vehicle was idling, the RPM's went up. could this be a problem with the idle and shifting? would the idle sensor cause it to not start without the shot of ether as well?

Spraying ether is not advisable. Its a explosive and can fire up the fuel pump and engine.
---------
Is there white or gray smoke from the exhaust when you crank it? It may be that some sensor is out of whack, causing the electronics to ****** or advance the timing out of range for starting. With the ether giving it a helping hand, it starts and the normal timing kicks in and allows it to run.
If no white some is seen from exhaust tail pipe then bleed the injectors and then recheck.
-------
old gasoline can be the other possibility for this problem .You can try draining the tank and refilling with fresh fuel. Also get clean the fuel injectors / the throttle body.
Thanks. keep updated for any more query.you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

1999 grand prix gtp supercharged thats starts up and runs for a few seconds then shuts down.

When you say it shuts down do you mean "dies"? If so try checking your fuel pressure regulator.

Crank sensor

It should be located directly behind the crank shaft pulley.. There also may be a second one on back bottom side of engine between engine and firewall..
