Since the original freon it came out with is no longer available you need to look and seeif it has already been converted to the newer environmenatally safer freon 134. if there is an indication that it was changed over, usually by a sticker or writing on the dryer or evaporator box then you will need a recharge with that. if it hasnt been changed you will have to have it changed over to the newer freon as you cant get the old one. both proceedures should be done by a shop that does alot of a/c work. it doesnt have to be the dealer but a good reputable shop that you have references for. this is not a task for the shadetree mechanic unless you have experience and all the necessary tools. if it needs conversion its actually againt the law to release freon into the atmoshere. you need to change the orifice tube anyway so just plan on taking it in to have the a/c tuned up. good luck.
It takes R12 freon, total amount 2.25 lbs. I would convert it to 134A freon, but the adapter's for 134a, will screw on to old fitting's, 1 can of 134a run's about $5.00, where 1 can of R12 if you can find it will cost about $100.00 and you would need 3 cans, 134a you would need two cans.
It takes R12 freon, but R12 is no longer made because it damaged the Ozone layer, so u must have a automtive repair shop convert the R12 system to the newer R134, this is fairly expensive, about $200
