Have you checked underneath the reed dogs for jammed thread and lit build up?

P.S.--it is usually a good idea to always raise the presser foot when threading the upper thread. That helps seat the thread in the tension disk.

Also, change the needle often (ie, every time a new project is begun or whenever it is damaged/bent/dull.
