My Craftsman Mulcher 917.377690 spits gas out of the exhaust, where might I find this problem, and how do I fix it?

I always mix it 40:1 so that the piston will always be lubricated and after I finish cutting I empty the gas tank and then restart machine so as to keep the fuel filter clean.

I inherited my Father's Craftsman Eager 1 mower/mulcher and I am not sure if it takes straught gas or has to be mixed with oil and I cannot find manual. Can you help?
Look for an oil fill location, like on all small motors. My guess would be it has oil reservoir crankcase.

Is my Craftsman Mulcher lawnmower a 4 stroke or 2 stroke engine??
It should be a 4 stroke, the only thing I can find on it is the mulcher blades, set up called a side discharge mower. It has a 5.5 HP ,22 inch, briggs and stratton engine. Hope this helps.

I cleaned the carburetor with a brush and took off the bowl and cleaned the bolt holes. Then sprayed it down with starting fluid.
