I have just purchased a Microsoft train simulator. My computer is using Windows 7. The game has loaded on but as soon as the ''loading'' screen shows it is half loaded it crashes.

Have you check the drivers and compatibly?

For your question, I suggest updating the graphic card driver and BIOS from the manufacture's site, also please right click the install file and choose run as administrator. If the issue persists, try to turn off UAC.

if you ck the box the game came in you will see that its only 4 win2k and maybe win-xp depending on the time you bought it , it wont run in a windows version that was created long after it was written , now that being said , win 2kpro version does have a backwards compatibility version , but then the other newer software you have loaded will not run stable and is prone to crash"s (blue screen of death)

a possible solution to your problem is something like I've done ,I've taken a old laptop with win xp running on it ,and islanded it (never connects to internet or network) so that m-soft cant ever shut it off this one I load all my great ole games to it (flight sim, trainz ,etc.) and it works just fine

Unfortunately I don't think your pc meets the Graphics card requirements so you won't be able to run it on your laptop.

I had problem on windows 7 just right click set compatibility to windows xp and set run as administrator

I had a similar problem and found that the program is not suitable for laptops due to the combined sound/video card in laptops.
Mine actually loaded in and crashed only when trying to play.
So its a hardware issue with laptops in general.

there may be a power issue with this card. make sure your power supply can handle the cards demands. also. if your using vista, you may want to switch to xp. i would update my direct x drivers as well.

Check that your system meets the games minimum requirement....Even if one of your game's minimum requirement fails the game won't load...Also you may be having a hardware/software conflicting problem( common with "self made" computers).
Check your games on another computer if possible
