New copeland compressor wont start

I installed a new 5 ton copeland scroll compressor today and it wont start. Start is going to "herm" on the capacitor. Common is going to "C" and Run is going to "T2." I know I have proper voltages and that the capacitor is good. I've all ready put some refrigerant in but it wont start. It sounds like an old compressor trying to start. It hums, stops for a few, then hums again. This is a new compressor and a HVAC tech told me to put a hard start on it. I havent done anything yet, I dont want to burn up a 800 dollar compressor.

Hello,By all means install a hard start kit on the cap.Your wiring is correct.A scroll compressor usally doesn't need a start kit but I have seen 5 ton units that take one.Check the compressor tag and make sure the compressor is not a 3 phase motor!

I have a goodman unit with a copeland compressor Its in Montana and I only ran it three time since the install. Some times it starts right away and sometimes it try's three or four time before...

When you say Montana the first thing I thought was, does it have a crank case heater? Is it actually working? May need a start cap installed, need to check amps at start up, possibly nearing locked rotor. Fan works every time?

Compresor not coming on, have installed new hard start capacitor, only 1.2 volts at compressor

You must not have both sides of power going to the unit. I will try to tell you how that unit is wired. I don't know what kind of hard start kit you have. If it is just a two wire start capacitor kit, you need to connect it to "herm" and "C" on the capacitor.

"C" from compressor will go to the contactor
"R" from compressor will go to "C" on the capacitor
"S" form compressor will go to "herm" on capacitor

note: "R" on compressor will go to "C" on capacitor with a jumper wire from the capacitor to the other side of the contactor.

What is the HP rating if a 3 ton air conditioner?

Hi, this depends on the compressor that is installed in this unit. It may be a Copeland scroll, a Tecumseh, its hard to say. Most compressors are around 2 hp for a 3 ton unit. On the data plate it will tell you the h.p. of the blower and condenser fan motors such as 1/4 h.p., or 1/3. If you can get the name and model numbers from the top of your compressor, you can call a a/c, Refrigeration parts house, wholesale and they will have it in there manuals. The B.T.U. rating for your compressor is 36,000. There are 12,000 BTU's per ton of cooling, this is something that almost no one knows, but now you do. If it were a smaller unit such as a 2 and 1/2 ton, it would be 30,000 B.T.U.'s. You can look at the model number of a unit and you will see numbers like this, 024, 2-ton, 030, 21/2 ton, and 036 a 3 ton unit and so on. Your compressor alone will be in the range of a 2 horse unit, which ever the brand of compressor they installed in it. Please don't forget to rate me on this as I know you will be kind. I will be here if you ever need help on repairs or trouble-shooting your unit in the future, just use my user name below.

I am looking for specs, specifically the RLA, on a Carrier Model 48LH006600(?)-- not sure about model #, nameplate data is totally faded!

It will tell you on the metal plate on top of the compressor, or sticker what the R.L.A.are and the L.R.A's are. If you cant read them, try and get what information you can from the compressor, like the name, Tecumseh, Copeland scroll, ect, The 48 would be the tonnage, 4 ton, or 60 a 5 ton unit. You should have enough of the model number for a air conditioning wholesale parts house to tell you this. we deal with this in the field daily.
Good Luck, Shastalaker7 I hope this helps you.

The 55 terminal is marked "herm" it goes to the start winding of the compressor. The 5 terminal is marked "fan" it goes to a wire from the fan motor. The common terminal goes to one side of the power line...The side that is NOT going directly to the compressor.
