Monitor blinking on and off. I had this problem once before with this same monitor. When you went from the screensaver to the desktop it would flicker back and forth between the image and the black. After several minutes, the image would return and work fine. Then would repeat itself everytime the screensaver would reactivate. I checked my power settings and found that my power settings had changed to Turn the Monitor off after x minutes. So I changed that to never and it fixed it, the first time. A few month later it started doing it again, but it would never stay on an image, just constantly flash back and forth between the image and black. I recently hooked it up to a new computer and it still flashes and will not return to the normal display. The Blue power light flashes on and off as well. Worth fixing or just buy a new one? lol

Please read below if you decide to DIY:
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed SAMSUNG monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

My monitor shuts down after one second.

Dell monitors automatically go into power-save mode after a preset amount of time when the computer is inactive. The Dell monitor will go completely black, instead of showing a screensaver. This doesn't mean that your Dell computermag-glass_10x10.gif has shut down. Instead, this allows your monitor to essentially turn off until it's needed again. You can change how long it is before the Dell monitor goes into power-save mode by changing your display settings.
  1. Step 1 Press any key on your keyboard or move your mouse. Either will turn off power-save mode. Alternately, you can press the power button on your Dell computer tower or laptop.
  2. Step 2 Press any key a second time if the monitor goes from power-save to stand-by mode. Stand-by mode allows the screensaver to appear.
  3. Step 3 Enter your user name and password into the login prompt if your computer requires a login. Press "Enter" to begin using your Dell computer.
  4. Step 4 Change the display settings on your Dell monitor to prevent your monitor from going into power-save mode prematurely. Right-click anywhere on your desktop and choose "Properties." Click the "Screensaver" tab and press "Power." Beside "Turn off Monitor," choose a time amount from the drop-down list and press "Apply."

Dell E173FP Screen blinking red, green, blue, white

The monitor is probably on protection.

To start unplug monitor from power and from computer and test computer with different monitor to find out if it is monitor or computer fault.

If it is computer fault and no video signal , then test:

  • Video cable.
  • Video adapter on PC (sometimes integrated on motherboard)
  • Motherboard.

If it is monitor fault , then the monitor is on protection.

When on protection you keep having a flashing led on front of the monitor , and monitor turning off by itself after a while, that indicates a fault condition.

The flashing light indicates a diagnostic state called protection.
When the Monitor goes on protection there are only two possible causes.

1The internal circuits are jammed because of electrostatic charges accumulating on capacitors, or because of a wrong voltage read by the main chip on your monitor controller board. this started the protection circuit.

2 The protection circuit detected a wrong voltage or a broken contact, identified an internal fault and kicked in , starting the flashing light.

If you are in situation one, then the monitor will reset just unplugging power cord for one or two hours, sometimes even minutes.

If you are in situation 2 , then there is an internal fault.

Common faults that can occur are a blown capacitor on power board, faulty inverter board, faulty input board, or a fault on LCD Digital Controller board.

Check also the video cable or any external connection cable, if the cable is shorting, or the connector is bad, you can get same flashing state because of the video cable.

Try moving the video cable, and if the cable is not built in, then also try a replacement cable.

If under warranty contact the manufacturer ringing the number on the user manual

If you want to repair at your own expenses, just locate any good qualified repairer.

Monitor picture turns on its side when it goes to screensaver

Sounds like your screensaver is using a picture of your desktop in it's code intentionally.

Right click on a blank area of your desktop --> select properties

--> click screensaver --> change it to "none" or another screensaver

Yesterday I was printing out an email and the screen lightly blinked and all the buttons at the top went away. (i.e., file, edit, view, help, etc.) All that's left is Smiley, Screensaver, Cursor, Ecards,...

Try right clicking on the toolbar you can see, and you should get a list of available toolbars. The unchecked ones can be turned on, and you should get back to what you had.

If something is failing on your monitor which stretched the screen, shutdown the computer with the start button, and power off the monitor. Restart everything and see if that resolves the problem.
