If the engine cranks over normally when you attempt to start you car, but the engine does not start, the problem may be NO FUEL, NO SPARK or NO COMPRESSION. The engine needs adequate fuel pressure, a properly timed spark and normal compression to start.

1) To find why the engine won't start, remove the air inlet tube from the throttle body, push the throttle open and spray a small amount of aerosol starting fluid into the engine. Crank the engine. If it has spark and compression but NO FUEL, it will start and run a few seconds before dying. If it does NOT start, it probably has NO SPARK.

2)Another method to check for spark is to pull a spark plug wire off of a spark plug (if it has plug wires, coil-on-plug ignitions do not) and place the open end of the plug wire near a metal surface on the engine. Have a helper crank the engine while you watch for a spark. DO NOT hold the wire while doing this as it can shock you. If you see a spark, the problem is not spark, but most likely NO FUEL or NO COMPRESSION. If you do not see a spark, the problem is in the IGNITION CIRCUIT.

3)Proper fuel pressure is critical for fuel injected engines to start and run. You should hear the fuel pump inside the fuel tank buzz for a couple of seconds when the ignition is turned on (no buzz means the pump is not running and the engine is not getting fuel). You can smell the tailpipe for gasoline vapors after cranking the engine. If you smell gas, the problem is likely not fuel but NO SPARK. You can also remove the plastic cap and press the schraeder valve test fitting on the fuel rail to see if there is any fuel pressure to the engine (not a very accurate test because fuel pressure must be at a certain level for the engine to start, for that you need a gauge). Even so, no fuel at the fuel rail would tell you fuel is not getting to the engine..

Saturn sl2 problems

Have you checked the fuel injectors? Fuel filter? Fuel pump? Sounds to me like you have a fuel delivery problem.

Try the following: remove the airbox and spray some starter fluid into the throttle body while someone else cranks the motor. If it starts for a second and dies, then you KNOW you have a fuel delivery problem. If it doesn't change and still won't start, then the problem is either a bad sensor somewhere (crank position sensor, maybe?) or no compression.

Engine cranks but will not start. fuel pump is working but it will only start if I spray starting fluid and then it dies

Sounds like a bad fuel pump.Check your fuel pressure it should be 55-61 psi with key on engine off if its not within specs replace pump and filter.

Starts then dies & won't restart

check fuel pressure, should be 40 psi.
try 2 things

spray starting fluid in air intake to see if it will stay running. It's fue then.

Try turning key to on nd wait 5 seconds for system to build pressure and pump to shut off. Turn key off, wait for relay clcik noise or 10 seconds. then turn key to ON again and wait 5 seconds to build pressure again. Then start engine. If it starts better, you have a bad check valve in the fuel pump or a bad pressure regulator on the fuel rail (unlikely).

I ran outta gas on my 1998 chevy silverado v.6 vortec. i put more gas in it and pumped the accelerator a few times and it still wont start. how can i fix it is it simple

Best way to fix it when you run out of gas is this. Because you ran out of gas, means your fuel filter is out. When you run out of gas, you end of getting like a air blockage in the line. Now, professional way is to take fuel filter off and fill with gas and put back on, BUT i will tell you a back yard mechanic secret way. Is get a can of starting fluid ( you can get at any auto parts store) and while someone is in side the Pickup, have them ready to turn the key. You are outside with the hood up, and you will be spraying a little bit of the starting fluid in the air intake of directly in carb area ( if carborated) but just spray into air intake. Have them crank the engine, at same time you will spray starter fluid in air intake, just a couple of quick sprays. You will notice it will start and maybe die again. That is normal, you might have to do this a couple times to get things flowing. HOWEVER, what normally happens when you run out of gas, the fuel filter picks up all that junk that has been gathered in the bottom of fuel tank and it has clogged your filter. FOR SURE, if you replace your fuel filter, it will solve this problem. Thank You, and I hoped this helped you.

I have a 99 Blazer with a starting problem. Fuel pressure is 48-52 psi with key on, after I get it started with starting spray it works at 58-62 psi. New battery, fuel pressure reg., alt, tune-up. Could it...

gm did a great thing of not letting the vehicle start until at least 55psi is reached. your pump is basically out. but if needed for emergancy before put in try to cycle key with out turning the stater over 3 or 4 times. it should build just enough pressure to get it running without starting fluid.

1998 expedition wont start

first of all its not good to spray starting fluid into the intake, its got a plastic "LOWER"intake and it can blow apart and **** too much air through it.Next reset the computer and it can be done by un-hooking the battery cable for a few minutes and if this works and runs for a while and does this again, then reset the computer again. If it does it again then maybe replace the computer..Then also check the fuel pump,it may sound like its working but it could have gotten hot and the plastic gear on the end may not be pushing fuel through when it runs for a while.

2000 Chevy Blazer Cranks but wont start...

What about the fuel filter????? Have you changed it out??? If you can spary something like a started fluid, that means it is a fuel problem. My last check, it has to be above 50-psi on the fuel pressure to make it run right. I had 35psi, but whould not get over 30mph or down hill maybe 45mph. Check both filter & pressure, but check pressure with a New fule filter!!!!
