Check that the wiring harness to the coils is getting 12v, this will confirm if the pcm is sending a signal for the sparks to fire. Check the ignition coil is sending spark to the plugs with a spark plug tester.

How long since a tune-up? Check fuel--spark when problem is ongoing.
I always check for codes even if the lite isn't on. Of course if the mil doesn't work that presents a problem. The procedure below for using the mil to check codes.
Check the fuel filter on car for a restriction. Check the air filter for a restriction(dirty). also check the IAC valve (idle/air/control) located on the side of the throttle body. To check the iac valve, start the engine and disconnect the electrical plug from the iac. Listen for a change in the idle of the engine. then reconnect the plug to the iac valve and turn on the a/c and listen for the engine idle speed to change. If not then replace the iac valve. What you are reading is a 1-2 (12) and a 5-5 (55). The 5-5 is always at the end of the code string. The 1-2 (12) indicates that the battery was disconnected and the ECU (computer) has been reset.
