1) Make sure the TomTom can "see" the sky well... the GPS satellite waves are rather weak and easily blocked by trees, and anything not a window.
2) Hook up your TomTom to the computer (see details at www.tomtom.com or in the manual)
2b) Do a "sync" and download all updates. One of the updates is a small file that tells the TomTom where the satellites are located this week, and helps it sync up much faster. The longer time between uses, the longer it takes TomTom to find the satellites, and that can takes up to 2-5 minutes sometimes.
That can be frustrating with a car full of people waiting to get going and the driver doesn't want to drive without making sure the TomTom works and is giving valid directions.
The GPS needs at least 3 satellite signals to operate. You are probably in a bad reception area. Move around a bit and try again until you see a signal array of 3 or more!
check the port is set to 8 not sure if your model has GPS search wher it finds the port and vbaude automativcally, if it does use it and see if that fixes it if not your battery is too low you have a damaged SIIRF chip and that is expensive to repair
Go to TomTom Home on your computer and do a update for your unit. In the update list you should see a GPS quick fix which helps the TomTom's aquire a signal faster. Hope this helps.
u need to up date gps if that dose'nt work sounds like it needs to be repaired i had same problem and found its better to buy new on then pay 275.00 to repair due the math
I had this problem (waiting for a valid GPS signal). I did a factory reset and the unit started working
again (yes, I lost all my settings, but what good is a GPS unit that
just sits there waiting for a valid GPS signal?). To do a factory
reset, go to menu -> change preferences -> Reset factory
settings.
