The red and white wires go to the R and W terminals on the thermostat. Disconnect what you have now and hook the red wire to the R terminal and the white wire to the W terminal on the new thermostat and see what happens.

Wiring with only 2 wires; which terminals to connect?

See RC and RH, RC is for cool, RH is for heat, you wire the red wire to the RH or red terminal ,either one will work actually but we generally switch the hot leg of power, W is the heat circuit

I am changing an old thermostat, and converting it in to a honeywell RTH2310B. The original thermostate has 3 wires, in red, black, and white. The new one has white, yellow, and green. How do I proceed?

Hi, the new stat should have rh, and rc, with a jumper wire on it. leave it on, and connect your red to either one. Connect white to W, and the black the must be using for fan, so connect it to G, if it was being used on the other stat. If it wasn't, tape it off. You should be up and running. I take it this is a heat only application.

Programmable thermostat

I am unsure of your question, but if you are just replacing your old thermostat with a new one, then connect the red wire to the Rh or R terminal and the white wire to the W terminal on the thermostat. Hope this helps
