First you need to install the drivers. If you don't have installation CD, use some software like this: Driver Update Software for XP Vista 7 8. After update you will be able to operate properly.
Wish you best of luck

You might just need new drivers for the reader/writer. Try the Husqvarna website first, or else do an internet search for "Husqvarna Reader/Writer drivers" or something similar. Is the reader/writer a USB or serial connection? You are going to have problems if it is serial and I am not sure there is a solution, but USB connection should definitely be able to get working.
Your reader/writer is set up for use on 2 USB ports (hence the 9 pin connector), one port for the reader and one for the externak USB port. This has nothing to do with the port version. The long and short of it is you need a card with a matching internal header. NEVER break off a pin! Some of these headers have reversed connectons so you probably broke of one of the data pins and runed that header's ability. Typically the readers like you have come with several cables, so that they can match the headers you have available. Older motherboards and add on USB cards did not use standardized header configurations aas you seem to have found out. Your best bet at this point is contact the manufacturer of the reader and find out what brand of add on USB cards they recommend and go with that. AND AGAIN NEVER REMOVE ANY PINS FROM A HEADER !!!
Drivers are on the installation disk. 3D will have it on cd#1 and 4D on the dvd. With the disk in the drive, plug the dCard reader/writer in and use the "add new hardware" wizard to allow the drivers to install automatically. Now,either repeat this for each usb port or remember to always plug in to the same port.
Did you purchase the 4D reader writer kit? If so, once you've loaded the driver for the reader/writer box, you go to the "organizer", select a design and "send" to your box. If you purcased new, the directions are pretty straight forward; otherwise, you may want to contact your locat Viking dealer for assistance.
Ok I just magically fixed my d-card reader, maybe this will work for everyone else as well: It seems really simple, but I unplugged the d-card reader from the USB port, and plugged it back in. A window popped up saying "New hardware found" and asked if I wanted to install the new hardware. With the install disc in the drive, I clicked ok for it to install and it just did it and it works now. I didn't open the install program on the cd (at which point before it told me I didn't have the right customizing software and it couldn't be installed), I just did it this way instead. It was quick and easy... give it a try and good luck!
