3.5'' internal memory card reader/writer installation problem

3.5'' internal memory card reader/writer has 9 pin usb 2.0 connector. My mobo has only usb 1.0 onboard with usb 2.0 PCI card that has 4 external and 1 internal ports. I want to install memory card reader/writer so have obtained 2 usb 2.0 male to 1x5 male connector cables. I have installed one of the usb 2.0 male to internal usb 2.0 port with 1x5 to one side of 9 pin connector from reader/ writer. The other I have installed the usb 2.0 male to an external usb 2.0 port with 1x5 to other side of 9 pin connector from reader/ writer by snapping off the unused pin on 1x5 male connector. Have made sure good earth through 3.5'' bay fixing screw to chassis. There is power to reader/writer and can read memory cards but the usb 2.0 port on reader/writer does not work. Any help or advice on how to get the usb port on reader/writer to work would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    To respond to nectoxic;

I did not snap off pin from header I snapped pin on 1x5 male connector i.e the equivalent of blank pin on 2x5 connector(female). I do not have a spare header on mobo or PCI card. This is why I had to get two cables with usb 2.0 male and 1x5 connector.

I had been in touch with supplier of device but they could not provide any information regaerding installation to an older mobo with usb 1.0 onboard with a usb 2.0 PCI card.

There was not any cables supplied with device only 9 pin female connector from device.

As I have now connected both usb males to external ports on PCI card(with 1x5's to 2x5(which is the 9pin connector from device)) I now have card reader/writer and usb port on device working.

You may want to check your "USB 2.0 PCI card" to see if it has an internal header for connecting another USB hub. You may need to completely remove it so that you can see the entirety of both sides of the card. Usually, it will be on the back edge for the card, (facing the front of your machine).

Your reader/writer is set up for use on 2 USB ports (hence the 9 pin connector), one port for the reader and one for the externak USB port. This has nothing to do with the port version. The long and short of it is you need a card with a matching internal header. NEVER break off a pin! Some of these headers have reversed connectons so you probably broke of one of the data pins and runed that header's ability. Typically the readers like you have come with several cables, so that they can match the headers you have available. Older motherboards and add on USB cards did not use standardized header configurations aas you seem to have found out. Your best bet at this point is contact the manufacturer of the reader and find out what brand of add on USB cards they recommend and go with that. AND AGAIN NEVER REMOVE ANY PINS FROM A HEADER !!!

How do i get my 2gb memory card to work on my samsung e900

Hi - Sometimes devices are finicky about which SD cards they work with. I suggest you try a different brand card. Be sure to purchase it where they have an easy return policy just in case. The phone definitely supports two GB cards.
Luckily two GB cards are pretty cheap and it's always good to have a spare.

My Janome customizer 2000 will not write to the scan card. It says that it will not recognize the serial port.

Hi, I have the same problem with mine. Janome have not been very helpful. I didn't know if it was the card or the card reader/writer. I have a Janome CX500. Have you solved any of the problems?

How to install a sd card reader on a Dell Dimension 8200 PC Desktop? no 4 pin usb on motherboard?

I managed to install a card reader on my Dell Dimension 8200.

The main problem is that the Dell motherboard does not have the correct USB pin. This is a 9-pin MoBo USB header.

The quick answer is I installed a USB card with an internal port.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Unbranded-USB-2-0-PCI-Card/dp/B00066LPA2/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1264968643&sr=1-6

Secondly I reverse mounted a powered 4-port USB hub in the spare 3.5" bay.

Third, I purchased 2 USB 5 pin male to usb leads...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/v2-0-Male-Motherboard-Header-Connector/dp/B000QC7NKM/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_t

You cannot buy a USB card with 2 internals and do away with the 4 port powered USB hub because the card reader does need to be connected to a powered USB port.

Installation help for dynex dx-crd12 all in one card reader

I would recomend installing the card reader this way. Shut off all programs that you don't need during the start up. When the card reader installs its kind of touchy, froze my computer a few times.

If you have blue 9 pin usb headers on your motherboard, consult your manual for this, or google it. Take the 5 pin connector, find the side with the red wire, face that side away from the side of the blue header with a missing pin. Make sure you connected to the row with 5 pins. After that you should be able to power up your computer and it will work.

If your computer doesn't reconize the card reader use the cd it came with.

Dell Dimension 9100 PC Desktop problem

I'm not sure where the floppy drive comes in, but if you have usb connectors on your mobo then you can connect the 5 pin connector to half of the usb pins.  Try that and see what happens.

The internal USB cord is made for the memory cards, install the floppy ribbon for the floppy disk. Don't forget to attach the power also.
