Well, if it's your IDE controller, you're not going to get it fixed without replacing the motherboard. But it seems equally likely it could just be a short in an IDE cable. That could also lead to the corrupt files that caused you to have to reformat in the first place.
A new IDE cable is probably around $10, and available at any computer store. I'd suggest starting with that.

are you able to do a system restore back before the upgrade which I am almost sure you did right, take the computer back in time to the upgrade you were able to do with it, like if you had xp upgrade to vista, you don't need the 16 digit number, if this is windows that is, if this is a gateway computer this of course wont work.
Phillynoy was right on! I have been fighting with the recovery and restoration hanging. When I read Phillynoy's comment about the optimal speed setting, I called Gateway. The tech said she would be glad to tell me how to change those settings for $59 tech fee (first 30 minutes). So I decided to look in the bios and there it was under Advanced. Change to disable the optimal speed and the computer has finally completed the installation! Praise God!
