Freeze Up I have a nvidia GeForce Fx 5200 by Gigabyte Tech and using XP I found lately that my pc screen freezes and even when I go to reformat it will freeze while I am doing it and sometimes has little white pixels on the screen. If I do manage to reformat it will last for a short time then freeze up again. I have tried everything except ripping the card out and throwing it away. Is my card cactus and is this common. Please help Gary

Have tried booting in safe mode but it just freezers up.

Also have 2 fans inside not sure that it is over heating.

I do have a spare card which is a old trident card not sure if it would be compatable as I run xp in a pentium 4

Also I noticed when playing a game that the screen will freeze and darken a little and the sound gets stuck on.

And could it be a pwer problem?

Thanks for the help I tried enother graphics card inside.

But did not fix it seems when I turn the tower on it lights up the cd drive and the main light on the tower lights up but then goes out and can only hear the fans inside slightly and then the only way to turn it off is to pull the plug.

Just does not want to kick boot up.

Have you tried running in safe mode to see if problem persists?

White pixels on screen is not a good sign :(
Have you cleaned the card from dust as it could be a overheating problem?

Do you have a spare card you could try just to be sure it is the card?

No dont think its a power problem with a 5200 as it does use much.

If its doing it in safe mode then its not a driver problem either.

Think your card maybe dying :( as its doing it during during format too. Best to try that old card and if problem goes away then its a faulty card you have....sorry for not having good news...

If your looking for a cheap upgrade then a 6200 is a good option though not a huge step up.

Is the old card agp or pci? Does it go in the same slot? If not there is a setting in the bios that you have to change for the initial display type. If its set to agp instead of pci then that may explain why the old card is displayin (if it is psi rather than agp)

It seems it is pci if its this one

Do i need to downlopad any software when i add a new graphics card?

Yes, you will need to install VGA drivers for the card to work properly and at its peak performance.
The drivers for your GeForce 5200 can be found here.

Just select the following from the boxes:
Product Type: GeForce
Product Series: GeForce 5 FX Series
Product: GeForce FX 5200
Operating System: The operating system you are using on the PC that you want to put the card into.
Language: English (US)

I have a GeFORCE FX 5200 PCI card, and onboard graphics. I had to restore my system, and cannot find the user manual. If it was available online, I'd follow the steps myself, but I'll settle for a quick...

Hi.

You do not necessarily need to disable the built in graphic adapter, the computer can manage two different adapters.
The nVidia should show picture with standard VGA definition (800x600 only) if simply connected to the AGP or PCI slot even if drivers are not installed, and even if built in GPU is not disabled.
If there is no picture, check installation in slot, check that card is not disabled in BIOS, check video cable is well connected, and if nothing works, test the video adapter on different PC, the card may be faulty.
