...same problems...
got toshiba notebook with hd 2600 card and want to play call of duty 4 more than 20 min. without this fuckin' warning^^
...so I did about 10 hours working on this problem and nothing really work :(
The only thing I found out, that if you clear the entrys of ati in the autostart (for example with msconfig) then call of duty doesnt shut down to desktop and there isn't the warning. But the driver still crashes and the game is disrupted!!
I'll try to center desktop now. thx for that last try. If this doesnt work...
...I'LL KILL VISTA !!!!!!! (my thoughts about vista were right)
ATI isn't the problem, it's just a victim ;-)
another tip...play battlefield 2142...not problems :-))
greets from germany,

I had this problem with Gears of War I bought it today the solution I came up with for vista 32 bit and a radeon card is as follows:
Went into Program files>Microsoft Games>Gears of war> Binaries
They have a file called WarGame-G4WLive.exe.cfg I took this and added .txt to it. (Don't know if this fixed anything)
I also started launching the game DIRECTLY from the Startup.exe file instead of autorunning from the CDROM.
Hopefully this fixes this annoying problem for someone.
As for the other games I wish I could help yea all. I still get the warning but only after I am done playing just played for 45 mins or so straight without any problems. As for the other games I'll try to find copys and play with settings and config files to get them to work. I'll repost anything I find here.
If this helped yea and you can spare a couple minutes goto my website and look at my work in progress tell me if you like it or not I realize it's not 3d http://www.geocities.com/meanguy76012/PASss.html

I had this problem with Assassin's Creed on a Toshiba Notebook with ATI graphics, after much searching (and swearing) it appears you can't at this point in time disable the Stretched Desktop, Vista doesn't support it. I ended up going into the program files and running the Dx9 version. I still the get the Stretched Desktop warning on exiting the game, but hey the game works.

I have the same problem with call of duty 4. Can play single player but get the same error msg with the mutliplayer. I've looked through just about everything i can think of. Maybe theres something in the ATI's Catalyst control center that im overlooking. I will be harassing ATI about this issue, i'll post again if i figure something out. If not, i probably returned it for a geoforce card, lol. Good luck

I have the same problems I sent an email off to ATI and responded with "We do not suport our notebook cards."
BF 1942, BF2, Call of Duty 2, they all dont work comming up with the same crap. "stretched desktop is currently enabled. Before you can enable an extended desktop on this display. you need to disable streched desktop." Vista doesnt even suport stretched desktop, I dont know what the hell to do.

Let's check if your pc has the Stretched Desktop enabled: 1.) go to clear area on desktop and right click mouse to get scroll menu and then select "properties". 2.) select "desktop" tab at top of next pop-up menu. 3.) look at lower right and check if "position" is selected as "Stretched"...if so, change it to be "center" and select "Apply" and "OK".

Well I have a fujitsu N6460 notebook with ati radeon 2600 graphics. when im on my desktop and right click there is no option for "properties" the next best thing i could find was system properties but that wasnt it. When i right click i only get this "customize" option but i have tried everything in that option to no avail.
stretched desktop
I cant play any games with vista becase of stretched desktop
I have a fujitsu notebook with an ATI card too, and and changing a stretched desktop wallpaper and unchecking an extended desktop seems to have no effect... the suggestion to fix this seems to assume XP rather than VIsta and points to the items I mention that don't seem to affect this problem
I have a toshiba with an ati radeon 2600 and am also have the same problem with the stretched desktop. I am playing Empire Earth 3 and my system specs are well above recommended. I can atleast play the game but it will turn off on me, and sometimes it will turn into a black screen then I will ctrl alt dlt to task manager to end task but it will not even let me do that. I need to hard power off. Anyways....when im on my desktop and right click there is no option for "properties", however I have found option for extending desktop on my monitor, through control panel and display setting, but it is greyed out and does not give me the option with administrator rights. How can I make it so I can access this option?
with vista, right clicking on the blank desktop screen does not give you a properties option!
yes I have this problem with a Fujitsu N series too with an ATI mobility radeon 2600 256mb card. Fujitsu has no update for the card driver and can't find anything in ATI catalyst controls or resolution settings.
well i try to play a game which i had just installed but it comes up with stretched dektop WARNING and i cant play its really annoying
Yeah I have the same problem too with a Toshiba laptop with radeon 2600 HD graphics. I get the box pop up when I exit to desktop after the screensaver (BOINC running SETI @ Home) exits.
It's driving me mad!
:o(
Yep, I have the same problem on Toshiba notebook with ATI card...
Cant play almoust anything due to this problem...
Any suggestions?
having the same problem also and am sad that there does not seem to be a solution. i only bought the damn laptop to play games on, i guess that was my first mistake!
YES.... same issue Fujitsu N6460 with ATI radeon - any solutions?
Toshiba Satellite A200/w00
I do not use my laptop for games but do drive a second monitor using extended desktop. I get the stretched desktop messgae and then, after a while the screen will shut off. Fujitsu has not fix for it and AMD denys responsibility. No one seems to know what streched desktop is or how to turn it off. Cleary it is a function of either windows or ATI's driver but have not found a fix after several weeks of phone calls and E-mails to Fujitsu.
I downloaded Fujitsu's updated driver as well as one fro ATI. Neither one solved the problem.
John
I have the same exact syptoms. More importantly, neither Fujitsu or ATI seems to even know what Stretched desktop is or how to turn it off.
TOSHİBA SATELLITE
AMD Turion 64x2
3GB RAM
ATI Radeon 256Mb
Vista 32
Whenever a game crashes, I see the same warning when I return to the desktop. Ati Catalyst control panel, (all updates installed) does not have an option to help me.
I have the same problem and also have a Fujitsu laptop.
i have an hp i tried to play empiers the game worked fine untill i closed it then the screen never went back to original size
