Temp warning light comes on in traffic. Fan runs ok and the engine is not overheating. Have changed temp sensor but problem still persists. Light even comes on sometimes when at speed and not in traffic. Water coolent level is fine.

Most likely neither is the problem, to verify the heater core is ok go under the hood and touch the heater core coolant supply hoses (hot engine) one will be really hot and one a little cooler, if this is the case the heater core is ok and you have another problem, that other problem is most likely a failed part or parts called the air temperature control blend door motor or door is defective. Also I doubt the engine is overheating, it gets hotter while sitting in traffic because the electric fan that cools the engine only comes on at about 225 degrees Fahrenheit. If you had an overheat condition the check engine light would also come on to alert you of the overheating condition.
Check the temp. sensor with a digital voltmeter.never use a test light on a comuterized car.should read same voltage on both terminals when fan energized. Highly suspect coolant temp. sensor @ radiator.
check you're fuse's for the fan. At highway speed's there is enough air flow for the radiator to cool the motor. If not run the fan from a switch from battery to fan as a last resort.
It is possible, how ever, I would check for inop coolant fan, or restricted radiator. If parts of the radiator are cool to the touch when the coolant fan has kicked in, very possibly resricted flow of coolant through the radiator.
is cooling fan coming on?? the coolant level light pertains to a sensor that is in radiator side tank that is notorious for going bad you may have two seperate problems normal temp at high speed tells me the wind passing across radiator is keeping cool when stopped or in traffic as temp increases pcm commands fan to come on if it does,nt you will heat up
Peugeot engine's have an alamenium cylinder head's and are easily damaged by overheating and for this reason the sensor's for coolant temp. are sensitive and any small abnormality in temp. will cause a warning. If the light bothers you then put a summer thermosatat in it this will leave it running cooler but it's nothing to worry about.
Cooling Fan Temp Sensor is the First thing You Check (with what you have described) Cooling Fan Should ALways come On When The A/C is turned On as A/C Adds A Load to Engine, If Temp Sensor is Faulty it Will Not Give GROUND Signal to ECM >For COOLING FAN >RELAY to Give ground and turn ON The Fan.
There ARE 2 temp Sensors that Serve Different Purposes 1 is for Dash READING GAGE & Or TEMP LIGHT the Other is For ECM or Fan Relay (SAME Thing) you Said>""can disconnect the sensor and fan continues to run" < This Leads me to think you Changed the Wrong One. TEMP SENSOR FOR 3.1L V6 is Located upper RH rear of engine compartment, near exhaust system. Temp SENSOR for 2.3L Engine is Located in LH rear of engine compartment. I Hope this Helps Lead you to a NON-OVERHEATING Pontiac.
Good Luck and Have A Great Evening. rejakwilson
