Hi I have a ASAS WL-700gE hard drive router.I have had this approx 6 months now. The power cable was pulled when still 'turned' on and after this the devie will just not work at all now. I am sure the hard drive is now corrupt and henc ethe router fails to initiate correctely. In fact I cannot hear the hard drive workig at all. Please advice what you feel I shuold do ?
You say you have owned this router for approximately 6months? Can you get a replacement, through ASUS, under warranty? That would be your best bet. If that is not an option, maybe a third party firmware could solve the problem. I prefer DD-WRT for my routers, and it has incredible support. From what I have read, third party software has been used with this router to help spin down the hard drive and to extend its life. I'm not sure if it will resurrect it, but its worth a try. Now, I would like to remind you to go through ASUS first, and only to use DD-WRT or other firmware, not by ASUS, as a last resort. Hope this helps.
Sorry, but I just found this little snip from TweakTown DOT com...
"...Once off, the drive
itself is revealed, and it’s a 164GB Hitachi Deskstar 7200rpm IDE
drive. The drive isn’t physically secured to the case any further, so
it slides out quite easily. Upgrading the drive is actually fairly simple. The operating system is embedded into the firmware, so replacing the drive with a larger one and then reflashing the firmware
will prepare and initialise the drive. This will erase everything on
the drive, and you’re still limited to IDE drives, but it’s still a
straightforward process. Needless to say, this will void your warranty."
This may be another option for you, but it will void your warranty.. Just like the third party firmware will void your warranty (as I failed to mention). Again, I hope this helps.
