I had that problem and I think I can help.
-Type in Sound in the vista search or do the control panel Hardware and Sound thing to get to the sound stuff. Hit the Recording tab. If you have the same problem as I had, you will see Stereo Mix and Microphone there, but Stereo Mix is the default and Microphone says "Not working." What you need to do is click on microphone to select it, and go to the bottom of that same tab and hit set default. Sorry I'm not too technical, but for me this solved the problem.

Just got off with Dell support. Make sure both headset plugs (microphone & headset icons) are plugged into the 2 headset jacks. Do not plug the microphone plug into the microphone port when using a headset. Use both headset ports. This was the problem for me.

Microsoft Vista SP2 could be the problem - Soundmax driver no longer working for the mic. Windows update installed High Definition Audio Device for a driver - mic still not working. My dual boot (Vista, XP pro) to XP still works fine. Driver problem with Soundmax and Microsoft.

Finally after few months of problem i managed to get my mic running in vista. First get the new drivers from net it will say version something compatibility issues when u try to update it. Then uninstall the driver from the pc from device manager, select sound video game controller… and then your sound card or onboard which ever company. Select and right click uninstall and then the check box delete the driver for this device. Restart you pc and when it starts to update the driver in the task bar cancel it. And go to the device manager same sound video… this time it will say high definition audio, select it and update driver, browse my computer, select LET ME PICK FROM A LIST OF DEVICES, next have disk and give the location of the new drivers that u have downloaded if it does not take them then try the i386 folder in it. Will prompt u drivers not ….blaa blaa yes and pronto did work for me hope it does for u. And yes I have asus board with soundmax drivers got them from
http://download477.mediafire.com/8yuuj4inln2g/2dytwwoznmm/%5Bwikidrivers.com%5D+Analog_Device_SoundMAX_6.10.02.6585.exe.
Best of all use driver genius pro, it will tell u what latest driver u should have. If it can get the drivers for u fine otherwise get the from net and follow the rest. Mail me for any other explanation [email protected]

I have tried all of the solutions above-
* Reinstalled Vista
* Checked jacks are properly connected
* I do not have ANY other software installed on Vista
* Disabled and enabled Sigmatel
* Checked other versions of mics
* Checked sound settings in control panel
YET my mic is not working. The speakers and headphones are working fine.

I am using Dell Inspiron 6400. The mic is external with a headset.

What kind of microphone are you using. If you're using a Carbon Mike (that's like the kind included in a lot of Software Packages), they're already high gain (some case too high). Look a the setting for microphone, you can increase gain by 10db, that will get you there with one (over gain).

If it's not a Carbon Mike, that's so common, you required a pre-amp for the microphone, I'm using a Equalizer that has a gain of up to 12db, and it work fine. It's FET, so it also isolates, so I'm using another on for Line Out. Work's great, and I can balance it.

Voice problem in yahoorooms

Can you confirm if your sound devices (microphone, speakers, headset, whatever) are installed and working properly? I don't just mean because Windows says so. I mean have you tested your devices and they are functional? I only know my headset, webcam and speakers work because I physically tested them when I got my new PC.

Logitech headset, new vista operating system

either the headset is not supported by Vista, or you need to right click on both speaker icons, normally coloured red and black and in the properties you need to see if your headset is listed as one of the microphone input devices, if you need to make the Logitech headset the default mic and not the windows generic mic. If you do not see it in the properties then it may not be recognised by Vista.

Query regarding mic support in Windows Vista

Yes you do indeed need to have Vista Drivers, That said sometimes the XP drivers MAY work if they and the software are installed in XP Compatibility Mode. Vista has been a nightmare for us in the Computer repair industry... one can only hope that all driver issues are addressed in any service packs to come? I doubt it tho...It seems a case of out with the old and in with the new...wheather ya like it or not.
