I was driving home the other night and my jeep suddenly jolted. What could have caused it? My rear main seal has been leaking for some time and i finally got the fixed yesterday.They did the rear axle bearing and seal, and renewed both sides.Could this have been the problem? I have a 1995 grand jeep cherokee lorado with 230,000 miles on it and its a v-6 4.0

It is a 1987 jeep yj with a 4.2 engine and it is a stick shift.

leaks?where... ok later,, right side (usa passenger) front. of block.

leaks are hard. there are only 2 ways to find a leak.
( besides the shot gun methods) ouch

1: clean clean it spot less. drive 10 miles, bingo cause.
2: insert UV dye to oil filler, drive 10 miles. using UV lamp with kit bingo.

there is no other way..

leaks have degrees. some are best ignored. (unless rich)
I cant see it so cant advise. (is oil levels dropping weekly)

wow changed the most hard seal first. now that is brave....

the trans is stick NO A/T here nor AFT fluids
flying out the cooler line right there.

keep on mind wind and gravity moves oil to where IT wants not you. big time.
is the fuel pump port leaking
cam gear cover gasket
head gasket
or distributor leaking oil from any of 3 places?
valve cover gasket leaks, or was over-torqued and not all do like that.
get it clean and you will find the leak
and drive it, sure, some dont leak just idling
rare but true.

CHECK ON TOP OF ENGINE INTAKE MANIFOLD AREA WHERE OIL PUMP DRIVE GEAR IS.O - RING AT THE OIL PUMP DRIVE GEAR WILL CAUSE LARGE OIL LEAK.OIL PUMP DRIVE GEAR IS LOCATED WHERE THE DISTRIBUTOR USE TO BE LOCATED.KEEP EYE ON OIL LEVEL IN CRANK CASE.KEEP PLENTY ENGINE OIL ON HAND UNTIL YOU FIX.I WOULD FIND LOCATE PROBLEM QUICK AS POSSIBLE BECAUSE OIL LEVEL GET TOO LOW ENGINE WILL SEIZE UP LACK OF OIL..

could be the rear main crankshaft seal

the oil reservoir could have damage. check for the other oil line.

You probably blew a seal somewhere. I would try to pinpoint where the majority of the oil is coming from then replace that seal. A lot of times oil pan seals, drain plugs, rear main seals and valve cover seals can cause large oil leaks.

remove transmission, remove flywheel, pry old seal out with seal remove or a screwdriver careful not to damage the block or crank. Clean surface with carberater cleaner or brake cleaner. Tap ne seal in with flat end of ball ping hammer. Put transmission back in.

Don't get rid of it just replace the rear main seal. It's not hard t do at all.

A leaking rear main seal will not cause your transmission to leak.

The transmission has its own seal and should not leak because of the engine rear main seal.

Due to the labor involved in replacing the rear main seal on the engine, it is best if you replace the front transmission seal at the same time if possible.

Installation varies on different vehicles but the principles are the same.

clean off the area where you suspect the leak is then run and check. The only way to change rear main seal (and have it actually work) is by removing crankshaft. I have seen this attempted at least a hundred times and never seen one yet that didn't leak. Some of the new oils for "older engines" have a seal softener in them tha usually will help but don't expect results for months...it took years for seals to harden & wear.

This could be the rear main seal on the crank shaft that is leaking, clean around all the areas completely to isolate the leak.  There are some oil additives available at your parts store that work to cause swelling of the seal to re-seal it.  This may or may not work, but it may slow the leak.
